Indians get young players ready to move up the ladder with program

By Stephanie Storm

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - Swirling snow during an early morning commute into Cleveland obscures a familiar landmark -- the giant toothbrush-like light poles of Jacobs Field. Young ballplayers are denied what is arguably the best view of the city.

Barfield savvy beyond his years

Indians' young second baseman grew up around the game, should help to solidify infield

By Stephanie Storm

Beacon Journal sportswriter

Josh Barfield remembers what it felt like to be a wide-eyed kid looking up to ballplayers.
While his father, Jesse Barfield, enjoyed a 12-year major-league career with the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees, Josh was luckier than most kids, who get the chance to meet their sports heroes once in a lifetime -- if at all.

Some tribe problems are good problems
Sunday, January 28, 2007
BY ANDY CALL

Spring training is less than three weeks away, and Ryan Garko is still a problem.
It's not really a bad problem, at least from the Indians' point of view. There aren't normally many drawbacks to having a 26-year-old first baseman who hit the cover off the ball for seven weeks after being called up last season.

INDIANS
First things first for young Garko

Monday, January 29, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
All winter the Indians have been shutting the door in Ryan Garko's face only to crack it open an inch or two to give him a glimpse of first base.
Garko didn't do anything wrong last year when he hit .290 (54-for-185) with seven homers and 45 RBI in 51 games. Besides needing to improve defensively, he fit nicely into the middle of the lineup, especially after designated hitter Travis Hafner was lost on Sept. 1 with a broken bone in his right hand.

I am a little disappointed in the loss of Guthrie. I thought he was pretty decent down the stretch, plus he is a lefty. Maybe I missed something, but I thoight he was part of the long term plan. Bummer.

Guthrie was never able to miss bats and that will get him killed at high levels. With Miller, Carmona and Slocum ready and others (Lofgren, hopefully a healthy JD Martin) on the way, Guthrie was the odd man out.

I got to meet Josh a couple weeks ago at the Geneva State Lodge in my hometown. He was with his new teamates for a Indians Lucheon. This was after the luncheon I got to chat baseball with him for a couple of minutes. It was quit the experience and a pleasure. I told him I was a Yankees fan and he talked about his father playing for them. He wasn't afraid at all to talk to anybody. The other guys just stuck to each other.

Wow, I really jumped the gun. I had the wrong Jeremy. I believe I was thinking Sowers, who I thought pitched well when he was brought up. He is pretty young too. I just confused the two. Now if Sowers isnt a left, then I am just nuts.

Nope, Sowers is still here and is going to be a key part of the starting rotation. He is a lefty.

Barfield enjoys his surroundings
Sunday, February 4, 2007
TRIBAL WRITES ANDY CALL

When it came time for Josh Barfield to make his first defensive play in the big leagues, he put everything he had into it ? unfortunately.

?The first ground ball I fielded was from Barry Bonds,? Barfield said. ?I was so excited to get Barry Bonds out that I threw the ball into the dugout.? The 24-year-old second baseman, acquired by the Indians from San Diego in a November trade, hopes to be a bit calmer when he begins his second season. The Indians have pegged him as the replacement for former All-Star Ronnie Belliard, traded to St. Louis last July.

BASEBALL INSIDER
Martinez working on limitations

Sunday, February 04, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Victor Martinez is promising better things this year. More specifically, better throws.
The Indians catcher last year threw out only 16 of 116 base stealers. Injuries, stress and bad mechanics worked against him.
"It's going to be much better this year," said Martinez late last month. "I've never had a year like last year."
