Marshall had the ball 11 minutes and 26 seconds longer than we did. TOP Marshall 35:43 to OSU 24:17. Marshall had 79 plays compared to OSU HAVING 59. Thats probably one of the major causes of our young defense looking not so good. They rushed the ball 44 times for 150 yards. Thats not that bad IMO.

We will make corrections this week in practice and I'm sure the defense will be fired up to redeem themselves. At least we have played two games against quality teams so that we can see where we have been exposed. NcSt cannot make that claim.

Weather will be miserable in Raleigh. It may come down to field goals and I like our chances.

While I agree it is a young defense and they did stop Marshall when they had to, you can also argue that they had the ball longer and ran 20 more plays than us BECAUSE they ran for 150 yards on 44 carries. Although the offense didn't hold on to the ball a lot, a great defense will get its self off the field. (last years, 2002's) This team is still young though and lets not forget we have a young defensive coordinator as well. If this is a great defense we will start to see them getting themselves off the field by forcing lots of 3 and outs.

I guess what i'm trying to say is that it's not the end of the world we didn't play the best defense ever Saturday. Maybe if you look at the stats it's not as bad as it seems. After one game people are already giving up on this defense. Cincy and Marshall may prove to be better opponents than anyone realizes. For example what if Marshall beats Georgia. What if Cincy wins the Con USA title.

The D only gave up 14 points and 7 of those were from good field position from a TO. Against Cinci they gave up two field goals off of great field position from two turnovers. Our D is solid, we just need to stop putting them in bad situations so often. Honestly though, I thought for as young as they are they have performed very well. Can you imagine what our D will be like next year. WOW!

Yeah, I thought the same after the UC game. Now, after two consecutive games in which we have turned the ball over multiple times, without getting a turnover by our D, I'm starting to get worried. If we turn the ball over 4 times against NC State, Wisky, Penn State, miSHITgan, etc., we will NOT win. Still, it says a lot that we gave the ball away and still won. Now let's just work on hanging onto the damn ball...

I submit to you my "2 drive" theory.

Almost every team we play will get 2 solid drives per game on our defense over the past 3 years. They have high paid coaches and kids on scholarship just like we do and about twice a game they move the ball well on our defense. What they do scoring wise with those drives is what makes or breaks them. Watch for this trend in any games you watch on tape from 2002 on, its happens a lot.

Look at the MU game, they had two sustained 80 yd drives, one netted a TD the other a big fat goose egg. The reason the D looked less than impressive was the TO's and subsequent great field position Marshall got in between those 2 good drives. This is what has to stop and I am quite confident it will.

I just wanted to put that out there because since I have been watching for it, the stress level has fallen somewhat for me and my OSU watching cadre. When the other team drives and scores we just say "there's one of your two" and it helps keep the sanity a bit.

Also it will help to think about this,
-OSU has surrenderd 27 total points. 7 of those were a straight up drive by the offense from a kick not a TO.
-Another 7 came directly from Ross's fumble, the D wasn't on the field.
-That means 6 TO's have equalled 13 points for the opposition even with an average starting field position of our own 30 yd line!!

Quite honestly, untill I see different the defense is the least of my worries. Once we swing the TO battle to our favor we are just going to flat start rolling some people imo.

The defense looks to be in a bit of a TO slump. They have had chances to get TO's but have not been able to make the plays (kind of like Gamble last year). This will change. I also think the offense will not turn the ball over as much once they get more experience.

A big part of the turnover slump has to do with the fact that we've played two very veteran QB's as well.... Starting with NC state and into the Big Ten, we'll see a lot of first time starting QB's. We haven't forced a fumble yet either... but once again, the QB probably fumbles as much as all the other positions combined.. once agin veteran QB's and the opposition using lots of 3 step drops... (OR in Guidugli's cas rollouts...)

The Turnovers will come.

I would add, similar to what I said in the tacked NCSt. game thread, that we've been playing a pretty vanilla defense so far according to some of our opponents. It seems likely that we'll throw a curve or two at the Wolfpack's green QB.

That having been said; this game makes me very, very nervous.

We forced a fumble from Stan Hill, just didn't recover it. Also dropped 2 INT's in the first half. The TO battle is fickle and its not like we haven't been close, I agree 100% it will come around.
