Internal usable memory

WolverineMike

Head Coach
So I'm looking to get a new phone. My LG F3 has been serviceable as my first smartphone, but the internal memory is awful. I only have like 4 apps downloaded and I have no space left. Is there a website, or a way to find out how much internal USABLE memory your phone is going to have before you buy it? Some phones say 8 or 16 GB memory, but with all the preinstalled crap there is sometimes only like 1GB left for your own stuff.

Thanks for the help

Not sure about a listing of usable space. General rule of thumb for Android. 8 GB is pretty much the bare min to run Android, but that might work for a grandma or someone that only uses it as a phone with an app or two. 16 will be enough for most light app users to get by, but on my Galaxy S4 I've had to remove some apps I didn't really need to save enough space for the ones I do. I also am still using the 16 GB SD card that came with my last phone, which is also pretty full so life would be better if I bought a 32 GB card and could move more apps to it. Some apps (especially the important ones that you need) tend to only run on internal storage and can't be moved. Personally when I look for my next phone I'll be looking for 32 GB of internal storage with the option of an SD card to store photos.

It's not so much the budget as it is the plan. I go through Walmart Family Mobile, so my options are kind of limited. But only paying 40 bucks per month for unlimited talk/text/data is pretty good.

But to answer your question, I don't want spend more than 200 bucks. I know that limits me somewhat, but it is what it is.

So looking at the larger internal storage will help with the usable storage, basically. That makes sense.

Can you bring your own phone? With that kind of budget I'd seriously look at the Moto G 16gb version. It even has expandable storage up to 32gb via micro sd card.

What's your budget? I love my Moto X. The upfront cost might seem like a lot, but in the long run you'll save more money if don't buy from carriers.

I'm thinking about the X or the Nexus when I decide to upgrade. I want pure Android without all the Verizon or Samsung BS. My 2 years just ran out so I switched plans to cut $30ish off my Verizon bill. There currently isn't anything wrong with my S4 so I figured I would ride it until it doesn't work or I get a really good deal on something new. I'm saving $20 a month on my phone line alone, which won't take long to save up enough for an X especially after a round or 2 of price cuts. It's good not feeling like I have to upgrade every two years, but I'm sure it will suck dropping $400 on a new phone rather than $150.

I'd personally go nexus. The moto x 2014 won't get updates quite as quickly........I'm still waiting for the stagefright update!

If you're doing Verizon... Get the turbo... (Or the nexus is good..) Nexus is maybe a little more ergo and sleek. If you phone takes a beating... Turbo is the way to go.

Thanks for the advice. After doing more research on my old phone, I realized it only came with 1.6 GB of usable internal memory. No wonder I could only download like 5 apps.

I purchased a LG G Stylo yesterday for 200. It has 16 GB with up to 10.37 usable. It's like night and day. My old phone only had a 4" display, the new one has a 5.7" display. It'll take some getting use to the bigger size, but I was tired of squinting at the old one. I really like LG, that's why I stuck with the same brand. So far I'm happy with the purchase.

Well... I'll say this about you Mike. No matter the subject, you never fail to depress me.

(It's got to be better... I'll give you that.)

Yeah if the name isn't Galaxy S..., LG G# (no words), Moto X..., or Google Nexus I'm probably not interested. For $200 I would have gone with the new Moto G. I personally can't wait to see the announcement for the new crop of Nexus devices on the 29th. The 5.2" LG model might be a winner for those of us that don't want a phablet.

It will be interesting to see if the price of the high end phones come down now that most providers are making people pay for the whole cost of the phone. Apple and maybe Samsung are the only ones that can charge a premium, but I doubt many people will be willing to pay a $200 premium for a Samsung and maybe even an iPhone. My buddy is paying $35 a month for the 6+ he just upgraded to.
