I use my android and just connect right to the site...not sure what an app would do to make things better.

I will absolutely look into it this Summer once we get into the vB 4.0 upgrade. An option like that is well over due for those who would prefer a steam-lined mobile interface.

The Spring Drive is approaching, if anyone wants to directly earmark a donation (in part or in whole) towards this sort of feature then that's how we'll use it.

Spring is here, my friend.

Let's Drive.

Do we have any update on this? Is tapatalk(app) a possibility?

I have heard other boards talk about this, or have seen the "posted by... " signature. Upon my in depth and thorough 2 minute investigation, it looks very inexpensive; $2.99 for posting capabilities or free for viewing and the only cost I could find for implementing by BP is a licensing if that was something that was of interest, but not a requirement...

It looks like Tapatalk activation would be free for BP - license fees only come into play if you wanted them to build a BP-branded app rather than using the generic Tapatalk app.

FAQ from Forum Owner:

Q: How much does it cost?
A: As a forum owner you are free to activate Tapatalk in your forum, and you are free to remove/deactivate it anytime you want to. A free version of the app is also available. There is a paid version at US$2.99 for iPhone, Android, Nokia (BlackBerry version is in beta and is currently free).

I can't speak for any Android phones, but for me using BP on mobile Safari is about as good an experience as I could hope for except for the fact that it's a battery hog due to all the graphics that get loaded on each page. I've taken a look at Tapatalk (the read-only version is free and RedsZone is an activated forum) and for me it's just a so-so experience - but it also looks like it could be a battery saver. Tapatalk does have a "View in Safari" button, so that could provide the best of both I guess.

I think I'd like to see BP support Tapatalk if at all possible.

Is this something that can happen at this point? Hate to ask for updates, but the discussion about Tapatalk on this board died out over a year ago. I also see another app called forumrunner that looks like it would be free for BP to install.

Is there a major need for it? Personally I found BP to work quite nicely for years with the Dolphin browser in Android, including iSpy.

I am not a tapatalk user but I am curious how much different the browsing experience would be.

For the original droid I had it would be nessesary for lengthy browsing, it just cuts out the fluff and leaves the posts. I liked it for other forums. With the Nexus I don't see a need unless I would be somewhere not 3G then tapatalk would be benificial.

My comments were based on my old Droid Incredible. The stock browser was not great, but that's why they have other apps.

I am genuinely curious. There may be other platforms out there that do not handle BP well.

I think there is a need for it. It is just a great application. You can save your login information, it even allows you to get updates straight to your phone for subscribed to threads and pm's. It is also faster than the other options.

A true mobile solution remains towards the top of our priority list, but there are some significant complicating factors that have led to the commensurately significant delay. Chief amongst those are the state of vbulletin 4 (it's been a trainwreck over the last 18+ months), the promise of another bit of forum software called Xenforo (developed by original vB coders from scratch in a "let's take everything we've learned and do it right in a modern setting" approach), and some issues related to the fact that we (like a number of other sites) have decided to sit tight with vB 3.8.x until the dust settles, which limits our options significantly.

There's even an option with vB (including our version) now to have native (iOS and Andriod) and dedicated apps for the forums, but that has (so far) appeared to be something of an unmitigated technical disaster. Complications and disasters we don't need.

So something *is* coming. I don't have an ETA, or even (yet) the knowledge of the form in which it will arrive. Tapatalk and Forumrunner are not high on my list as they're external solutions. They're not off the table, but the goal is to have something that's completely internal, seamless, and not yet another opportunity to have problems.

These days for a number of reasons, some (but certainly not all) of which are about my own personal situation, I have to take the "measure twice, cut once" approach. Which is to say I can experiment less (I experimented a lot early on, with mixed results), and do a lot more planning and due diligence before making changes. As this change is directly impacted by a bigger issue (where we're going (or not) in terms of forum software), it's been a slow and tedious process. I hope and expect the end result will be well worth the wait.
