Is anybody watching Friday Night Lights series tonight?

The show, from what I've seen in the previews for it, the team is not Odessa Permian, which is the team the book and movie are based off of.

According to Wikipedia, this is true........
The series is "inspired by" the book and the movie Friday Night Lights, not based on it. Set in current times, the action takes place in fictional Dillon, Texas. The fictional Dillon football field and Dillon High are the main settings, but Friday Night Lights also will be about families, friendships, dreams, hardships, and heartbreaks. The story is originally inspired by the book Friday Night Lights about the Permian High School Panthers of Odessa, Texas.

Friday Night Ripoffs

Tuned in tonight with pretty low expectations to the TV-show based on the hit movie Friday Night Lights. They managed to maneuver below what I expected.

After 10 min, it seemed like they had procrastinated until the network deadline. Then in a scramble to pull off a TV show, they copied as much as possible from the DVD. The opening scene was nearly a carbon-copy (TV interviews from practice, seated interviews, practice drills, even some dialogue).

They did a poor job repackaging the movie characters, and an even worse job casting them.

The P logo has been reused as well.

Mack Brown crashed the HS pep rally and was a jerk, telling the HS coach how to run his program. Tho he did say 'Some people think you've got to have a great QB to win a championship... that's obviously not true' :p

I waited it out to see if the football game was any better... the pregame speech was awful, but I suppose that is to be expected by a stockbroker (Early Edition) pretending to be a football coach. The pregame shots were filled with ripoffs (longhaired FB nerves).

The missus and I both gave it a thumbs down. (Both of us really liked the original movie, and that is a hard act to follow).

So much for the "Best Pilot of the Season" - as it was billed.

I thought is was "ok". Not great, but not horrible. I missed the first 15 minutes of it, but watched the rest.

I think the QB going down with an injury was poorly placed in the show. I think they should've held off on that one until a few weeks into the season, to add to the drama. But what do I know, they're the directors.:tongue2:

I will grant that it had one (unintentionally) funny moment.

Early on in the pre-season "media-day" the starting QBs parents are asking the scout sitting next to them how good their son is and he starts out:

"Let me tell you I've been scouting Quarterbacks for Notre Dame for 28 years .."

He didn't get any further in my hearing as the thought went through my head - So, you're responsible for 5-time Heisman Winner Ron Pawlus and his stellar career with the Irish!

They probably won't have a couple of weeks.

Last play from the < 30, qb takes 6+ seconds to throw the ball, yet amazingly no one was beyond the 50 when it was released :slappy: The WR brings it in easily at the 30 > (thanks to his 10-15 yd cushion), and runs away with any lingering optimism I had for the show.

i decided it was going to suck after they asked the fullback "i smell alcohol, have you been drinking?" during the opening interviews give me a break. isn't the coach's wife the same wife from the movie? wtf? that show is awful. the one on MTV about Hoover is way better, plus its real.

Yeah, but he would also be responsible for recruiting Jimmy Claussen. Haven't you heard how good he is? :tongue2:

Yeah - I mean they should have done something original, like casting this fellow as the coach ..

Well it looks like JWins has hit on most of the points I was going to hit on, but I thought I might add a couple more.

First off NBC fails again, but what is new. Especially now with Friends and Will and Grace off the air they are going to need some big shows. Well this was suppossed to be one of them. I mean what could be better than a sitcom about footballl. On a off nite of football all the football fans are going to eat this up. Well if that was their thinkig the producers did a bad job of appealing to true football fans.

So I start watching the show and as soon as they show the backup QB as a main character not popular sorry backup I turn to my g/f and say that I will bet you that the main qb goes down and the backup will come in and save the day. I didnt expect it to be the very first game tho. So predictable.

Then of course NBC had to throw the Notre Lame thing in. :!

Then Mack Brown comes on and I am like this is pretty cool they are trying to show the college coaches interacting with the high school coaches, but he acts like he is a fan of the school, and is going to be mad if that school doesnt win. Now why would a college coach say that. Thats right they wouldnt.

Then you knew with it being a movie about Texas football they would have to throw racism into the show somehow. Of course they did.

Then for the game you knew that once they went behind they were going to make a miracle. Instead of making it a normal comeback, they make them down 10 with 6 minutes left. Then once the QB threw the INT, the thought goes into your mind now if they have them pull this off how realistic is that and then you think to yourself they are going to have the QB pull a MoC. Well sure enough the tiny Qb knocks the shit out of the returner and makes him fumble. Of course here comes the injury.

Then you have a captains meeting after the injury. Can't say I have ever seen anything like that. That was pretty corny how the ref gave a thumbs up and said good luck to both teams. I understand they put it in there to annoint the qb captain, but why not after the game, not there.

Then game the stupidest part of the whole show. The backup who looks like a girl throwing the ball rolls out eludes 3 or 4 defenders and throws a 50 yard pass on a strike to a guy that is magically wide open on the very last play of the game. Keep in mind the QB dropped back about 30 yds.

O yeah and I forgot the other predictable part, you have to have the town slut that wants to get with all the players and of course in the future episodes they show the two guys getting in fights b/c of the girl.
