Why is it that every time I click on a thread it takes me to the bottom of the page reagardless of where the last read post is? I see all of the red "New" tags but is always takes me to the bottom/last post.

Because your browser has to relearn what you've seen and what you haven't. It should only happen once, and then future visits should behave properly. Unless you're on IE8 or below, then it's your browser not conforming to web standards that are a few years old, I'm afraid. If that's the case, Deety posted a workaround that seems to have helped people, I can try and find it for you.
