Jake Diebler (Head Coach)

One thing I did read was that the Ohio HS coaches were in approval of Diebler's hiring. Probably most came because of his dad, a longtime HS bball coach in Ohio. Hopefully that augers well for the Buckeyes keeping some of the home state talent local. (we have one Ohio commit, #5). Have watched a lot of talent go to the blue bloods, rather than spend it here, but that will take a while to turn around. Anyone know why Taisman didn't suit up for Illinois? Would hate to lose that guy to the portal.

Pretty sure Chatman hit a 3 vs Illinois

While the season is over, I feel like this is when the real work begins for Diebler. He’s got to lay the groundwork for the future of the program starting now. There's a lot of work to do between figuring out the coaching staff, conversatiins with the current players, monitoring the portal, recruiting and scheduling. He might not be able to take a break for a while.

I might be in the minority, but I'm thankful that OSU moved fairly quickly to make Jake the head coach. This offseason is turning into a big one, as the transfer portal has heated up and OSU has a couple more scholarships to fill "unexpectedly" - I say it that with quotes because of course the initial plan is to keep guys four years, but you can kind of expect 3-4 players to transfer or turn pro "early" literally every season now. With a coach being fired, that 3-4 early departures usually turns into 5-6. Thankfully, we have a coach now who can focus on filling out the roster at a time when there are many options available. To me, you can't really expect Diebler to have kept the returning roster completely intact, because very few coaches actually do that nowadays. So it was very important to have our coach in place at the beginning so OSU wasn't at a disadvantage. Now let's see how young Jake is able to take advantage of the space on his roster. So far, by adding Meechie, it's looking good, and I'm hopeful there are going to be more good additions in the coming weeks.

A major concern I have... what support does he have for the recruiting aspect?
Has he ever recruited before or only coached?
Does he have a Mark Patoni & staff.. a Jon Diebler?

Why can't he hire Jon? Aren't most contracts 2 yrs? Didn't Jon start w Thad 2 yrs ago?
I'm no insider, so can't answer that, but I do know Jon has been very loyal to Coach Matta over the years. We'll just have to see how things play out. I feel like with OSU having the NIL collectives getting some cooperation from Jake, they should be able to get more good players through the portal.

Starting from the bottom ...

I do take issue with Painter ranked ahead of Izzo. Izzo has how many more Final Fours than Painter? Seems like some recency bias here.

I think recency bias because they're talking "right now" as opposed to lifetime. Izzo's last few years have been very middle of the pack. I think he's one of those stubborn guys set in his ways and the game has kind of passed him by. Hell, I think #2 is extremely generous given Sparty's last 4-5 years.

I would agree that he has fallen somewhat with the NIL & transfer portal era, of late it just doesn't seem like he is getting the level of talent he should be getting. But if you ask which coach of all the ones in the B1G would you trust to get the most out of any given team, he should be the pick right now if you're being objective.

Unfortunately, Jake won't be able to hire brother Jon right now. So basically what happened is Jon is not yet a full collegiate assistant coach, so his brother couldn't hire him as a full assistant due to state nepotism laws. I would assume at some point down the line Jon will get promoted elsewhere, which would open the door for him to come back as Jake's assistant, just not right now like everyone wants.

Actually I see I misstated the problem. Basically, OSU will need to switch the assistant coach hiring/review responsibilities to someone other than Jake in order to hire Jon. For example, the OSU director of basketball operations can perform these roles, but that requires a shift in duties from what they are currently. And then they just need the assistants to not be related to Dave Eglehoff or whomever else the DOBO is in the future.
