Jim Bollman (Stay calm and run Dave)

Talk means 0. All this means is he is well liked which is not the issue.

consistent undeniable underachievement.

Whether it's the recruiting, teaching, motivating, or play calling, someone is to blame. I'm not necessarily saying it's even JB, but lackluster offensive performance has been a hallmark of JT/JB offenses.

I'm not calling for any change yet, but THIS year there are no excuses.
They have the horses, so recruiting strategy and lack of experience cannot be blamed this year.

If they come out and struggle with Marshall we'll have a pretty good idea of what's in store for the rest of the year offensively.
JTs teams peak at the end which is just fine with me, but the line play just seems to take SO long to develop under him for whatever reason.

I'm talking about this kind of early season thing that we're used to around here:

1) Really? Cordle underachieved at LT? Browning at G? Hall at RT? Those guys all overachieved, and I'd say Boren & Brewster have matched the production we expected for their ability & respective maturity as players. Ragging on Bollman was very popular for obvious reasons, he deserves at least a respite when his guys do the opposite.

2) You should use this as a user title.

Did you notice the difference when Hazell was calling the shots? Night and day difference. His role expanded in the bowl and is expected to continue. Skepticism is obviously warranted given past hopes, but the progression of this offense is paying nice dividends in taking it to defenses instead of trying to overcome self-inflicted barriers of predictability and traffic.

They seemed to handle USC quite nicely, a lot better than past outings against Texas or even Navy.

Who cares about Marshall? Miami is what matters.

Those guys were also set up for failure by being put at the wrong positions.
Why should a third tier Center start at LT for Ohio State ever unless there are MAJOR injuries? Where are all of the Tackles?
Well, when you make it policy to only "work with small groups" and one or two guys don't pan out you end up with centers at left tackle.

Boren is a transfer and came here good and seasoned.

They were fair to good when they ended up at their natural positions, particularly Browning. Browning was a nightmare at RT yet they put him there as well.

I am definitely not sold on Hall at RT just yet as he was way too slow at times for the position. He would be a mauler inside.

For whatever reason we DO seem to have the Center position figured out.

Good to hear that although I'm not totally sure when this happened.
When they finally started baiting defenses with our power game and punishing them for it I presume.
It WAS a thing of beauty to start seeing the defense start biting on the DAVE plays that were fakes...I'll assume that was the Hazell touch you're alluding too.

On the same page with you here. Everything will magically look a lot better when the defense can't cheat.

Marshall will be the bell weather for what kind of team this is physically up front. If they skate by with a sloppy game, it will probably tell us what we're in for against better teams early in the season. We should have destroyed that USC team.

Interesting when he mentioned all the OL kids had been coming to camp for years. It really seems like they liked how these kids were able to learn from their instructions in a camp setting.

Or maybe I am just reading too much into the comment

As wadc45 pointed out in another thread, during the NLOID presser yesterday Luke Fickell twice mentioned that Bollman should be given credit for the early recruiting contact with Curtis Grant.

Bollman Unfazed by Low Numbers on O-Line
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? When the Buckeyes missed on mega-prospect Seantrel Henderson last year on National Signing Day, Jim Bollman had to formulate a backup plan.

Rather than scramble to find another lineman in the class of 2010 to fill Henderson?s spot, Ohio State?s offensive line coach opted to bank the scholarship for 2011.

?I don?t think next year we?re going to have any problem,? Bollman said last February.

?We might have to get one more next year than you expect.?

The Buckeyes quickly sent out offers to four in-state offensive linemen, as well as a handful of out-of-state guys for the class of 2011. By April 3rd, they already had commitments from four of them with the hopes of adding at least one more.

It never happened, and the Buckeyes came up short on the offensive line for the second year in a row when only three linemen signed with Ohio State on National Signing Day.

?We were headed in the number of four or five. We're a little bit short here at the moment,? Bollman said last Wednesday.

?We'll see how things evolve and develop. But that's something that we'll have to see here shortly how things develop.?

Bollman gets crticized alot but he is very cautious when he makes an offer. In JT's era the OL numbers have always been lighter than other teams. Generally 12 vs 15-17 on most teams. This frees up scholarships for skill positions, namely DB's & LB's. If you miss on an OL you are stuck with them for 4-5 years. OL busts cannot move to another position. I'm fine with who Bollman and the staff offer because they do their homework. Dodson selecting Wisky was a huge suprise and blow IMHO.

Say what.

Frees up scholarships - reminds me of when Pee Wee Herman wrecked his bike and said "I meant to do that".

Do their homework - you mean like not evening bothering to review his film before he camped. Not bothering to invite Decker up for a meaninless hoops game. Not bothering to even return multiple phone calls/emails to the California coach who is an OSU fan and pleading with Bollman to look at his OL who recently committed to Mich. Like Dodson who was floated some bizzare cannard about an ACT score despite offeres from Vandy and ND.

Miss on an OL and you are stuck - you mean like Blankenship, Kerr, Skinner, Mitchum et al. The class of 1 ol (Blankenship) was one for the ages.

Given the situation nobody should of gone on vacation before they vetted Kozan. Like when Congress is forbidden to leave. Kozan will be committed elswewhere before Jimmer Bollman gets back from his "well deserve" vacation.

Bollman the coach is up for debate. Bollman the recruitier isn't. He is awful. He has always been bad but it is inherently obviuos he is only coaching one more year and making no effort in terms of the future.
