White Sox 9, Angels 7 -- Jim Thome hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to boost host Chicago yesterday. He became the 23rd player to reach 500 home runs.
The slugger drove a 3-and-2 pitch from reliever Dustin Moseley (4-3) to left-center field. It was the first time a player hit a game-ending homer for No. 500.

Thome ties Mantle on all-time HR list as White Sox salvage series finale

BOSTON -- Jim Thome knew how much the Chicago White Sox needed a win. He helped them get one with a memorable homer.
Thome hit a two-run shot in the first inning to match Mickey Mantle for 14th place with 536 career homers, and Chicago beat the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on Sunday to end a three-game losing streak.

"To tie Mickey Mantle, you're speechless. What do you say?" Thome said. "It's really hard to talk about because when you throw Mickey Mantle's name around, that's probably one of the greatest home run hitters of all time."

Thome is an old fart. He can't hit any longer. Even though I hate the White Sox, I have to say that they are screwed over until next year, as Thome is very close to vesting his option for 2009. The White Sox's old guys can't hit, including our boy Swisher

Still one of my all-time favorite Indians. Met him once at an autograph signing and he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Spent time talking to anybody that wanted to. Also, never popped up on the Mitchell Report, one of the guys that has apparently done things the right way. Part of me has always hoped he somehow-someway ended up in Cleveland to finish out his career.

Good for him. From all accounts, a great guy.

Many years later, still having a problem with how he left us.

Thing is, this accomplishment SHOULD have happened with Jim in a Tribe Uniform. Imagine the buzz in the city with Jim approaching 600?

Oh well, he made that call. And athough I'm sure he'll enter the Hall as an "Indian" the "what if's" will surround him forever. Loved him as a member of the Indians and appreciate all that he did here, but it ALL shoud have happened here.

I too was a bit bitter about how he left Cleveland...and to go a divisional rival. Yuck.

Oh well. I suppose he has to deal with it more than we do because he had only one career while Cleveland fans have seen hundreds of careers go different ways
