Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

Something tells me Tressel's agent will be deluged with calls this winter:

Tennessee
Auburn
Arkansas
Southern Cal

If it weren't for the compliance issues, I'd say he'd be the favorite candidate at USC. But I can't see Haden going that direction, so the other 3 should be placing toll calls to Akron any time now...

I could see him at Tennessee (well not really, but theoretically), but Auburn is a disaster and Arkansas is a minor player who is only recently relevant.

Max maybe I am missing something here but, ....
How would these schools overcome sanctions from Tressel's 2011 NCAA imposed 5 year show cause?

Championship coach Tressel in exile could complicate Ohio State ceremony

A man who reached the top of his profession before plummeting from grace has regrets. Jim Tressel says he just has no time for them.

COLUMBUS ? Jim Tressel prefers to look forward, keeping a schedule that permits little pause for reflection.

An admitted Type A personality, the former Ohio State coach arrives to his office at the University of Akron by 7 a.m. and takes his work home at night.

?You go to bed thinking about what you?ve got to get done the next day, and you wake up before the alarm clock rings because you want to go get that done,? said Tressel, 59, who was hired in February as UA?s vice president of strategic engagement.

A man who reached the top of his profession before plummeting from grace has regrets. He just has no time for them.

?If you expend your emotion on yesterday or two weeks from now, I?m not sure you?re going to have enough emotional energy to handle today,? Tressel told The Blade in a recent interview.

That outlook, though, will be challenged this month as Ohio State turns back the clock to recognize its 2002 national title team.

Will Tressel return for his first public appearance at OSU since he was forced to resign last May?

Plans to recognize the 2002 team at halftime of the Michigan game on Nov. 24 have lent to the potentially awkward scenario of honoring the coach in part responsible for the Buckeyes? banishment from postseason play this year.

Tressel is not the only one from that season whose narrative detoured.

Running back Maurice Clarett was dismissed from the team after his sensational freshman season and later served time in the Toledo Correctional Institution for an armed robbery conviction. Offensive lineman T.J. Downing, a freshman in 2002, was arrested in 2008 on felony drug abuse, drug trafficking, and weapons charges. (Downing pleaded guilty to felony possession of cocaine and told The Blade last year he has not used drugs since his arrest.)

But Tressel?s appearance seems to present the most complications. While the coach remains a popular figure in Ohio, it was just last year he admitted to lying to NCAA investigators ? and failing to alert his superiors ? about his knowledge of Buckeyes players receiving improper benefits from a Columbus tattoo parlor. The NCAA leveled Ohio State with a one-year postseason ban and scholarship restrictions, and Tressel with a show-cause penalty that effectively prevents him from coaching college football until 2016.

Tressel and Clarett did not return messages this week seeking to clarify their plans for the reunion, though former players said they hope both come ? at least for the private dinner the night before the Michigan game. (Tressel, Clarett, and several others figures from 2002 team are committed to appear at the Ohio State Alumni Club of Greater Cleveland's annual football banquet on Nov. 27.)

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith also confirmed Tressel and Clarett will be welcome.

?Jim Tressel, Maurice Clarett, they were part of that team,? Smith said in a phone interview. ?They?re not banned from campus. We?ll welcome them if they choose to show up for the ceremony and halftime of the Michigan game.?

Players expect warm welcome from fans for former coach Jim Tressel: Ohio State Football Insider

COLUMBUS ? As Ohio State fans regret, and Buckeye players deal with the aftermath of, Athletic Director Gene Smith's decision not to self-impose a bowl ban in 2011, Jim Tressel, the coach whose actions led to a bowl ban, will return.

The 2002 Ohio State national championship team will be honored on the field during Saturday's game with Michigan, with a huge number of former Buckeyes expected to turn out for the occasion. And the 2012 Buckeyes, most of whom were recruited and coached by Tressel and many of whom still stay in touch with the old coach, are looking forward to it as well.

Tressel has indicated his intentions to be part of the reunion. And the current players expect OSU fans to greet him warmly.

"Honestly I feel like the fans never really lost their love for coach Tressel, because of the stuff that he did and the kind of guy that he was,? senior safety Orhian Johnson said. ?I know that I never did. All I can think of is guys going out there and praising him for what he did. I don?t have any animosity toward coach Tressel in any way, shape or form.?

"I am looking forward to seeing coach Tressel,? right tackle Reid Fragel said. ?He?s a great person who I admire very much. I don?t really think it will be awkward. I think everybody is kind of looking forward to seeing him since we haven?t really seen him in a while. I don?t think there?s any bad blood with him and the guys on this team at this point. What?s done is done, it happened, and I think everybody has kind of moved on."

The reunion was organized by 2002 captain Mike Doss and some other Buckeyes, not by the school. But Smith said from the start that anyone from that team was welcome to attend.

Some people will embrace it, some people will not,? Smith told The Plain Dealer on Monday. ?Some people will feel it's awkward, some people will not. I'm not going to feel it's awkward because I'm realistic - he was part of that team. And I know what he means to those players, and that's what I focus on. If Mike Doss and those guys want him there, they should have him there. And I know that's a different view from what a lot of other people feel, and I understand that.?

But the 2002 Buckeyes and 2012 Buckeyes are in agreement. They want their old coach back.

"I hope that Buckeye fans would welcome coach Tressel back and the things that he did for this university were amazing,? punter Ben Buchanan said. ?I have the utmost of respect for him and for a lot of these seniors, we feel very honored that the man that recruited us and brought us here and developed us when we were younger players is going to be able to see us off in our final game. I?m very much looking forward to having him in the stadium.?
