Jim Tressel, a finalist for president at two universities, said he never plans to coach again

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Jim Tressel said he doesn't plan to ever coach again, despite spending his career on the gridiron and taking teams to the pinnacle of success.

Tressel, a candidate for president at Youngstown State University, told a questioner at a public forum today that coaching was not in his future.

“I did it for 38 years and enjoyed every minute of it,” said the former Ohio State University football coach who was forced to resign in 2011 because of NCAA violations.

The NCAA imposed a 'five-year show-cause penalty' on Tressel, which means any NCAA program that wants to hire him has to 'show cause for why it shouldn't be sanctioned. The order expires on Dec. 19, 2016. The Indianapolis Colts hired him as game-day consultant during the 2011 season.

“I do not wake up in the morning and say I wish I was coaching," Tressel said. "Sometimes I read the paper and say I am glad I am not coaching. But on Saturdays or Sunday afternoons during playoff games it is exciting and I may yell ‘Call a time out!’ But I do not foresee any interest in coaching. I have got more important things to do. Not that it (coaching) is unimportant.”

Re: The finalists won’t have too long to wait. YSU trustee and search committee member Carole Weimer said she hopes it reaches a decision in the next week.
Meanwhile, UA trustees met in executive session Monday with constituent groups that interviewed UA’s three finalists — Tressel, Ronald Nykiel and Scott Scarborough — last week.
UA is expected to name its next president in the next couple of weeks, definitely by Memorial Day. Both universities hope to have a new president in place by July 1.

Interesting that YSU hopes to make their selection first. Wonder if this is a specific attempt to offer Tressel the job first in hopes that he accepts it and then takes himself out of the running for the Akron job.

YSU LIVE | UPDATED: Tressel chosen next #YSU president

Jim Tressel has been chosen as the next president of Youngstown State University.

The YSU Board of Trustees unanimously voted to offer him the job this morning.

Dr. Sudershan Garg, chairman of the board, said Tressel has the personality and leadership skills for the job. Garg added that Tressel's community support will raise YSU's profile across Ohio and nation.

The board believes "he's the strongest candidate to lead the university for the [remainder of this] decade and perhaps beyond," Garg said.

I'm happy for him.

I just don't understand what people upset with this news want the man to do with his life. Just not work? He's trying to contribute to society.

Just reading some reaction, it seems like the people from Youngstown and YSU students like the hiring. Isn't that what really matters? Not idiotic opinions of sportswriters, columnists and talking heads (looking for views, clicks, etc.).
