Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

Anyone remember the perception of Tom Osborne going into the 94 season?

He was too conservative, his offense wasn't "modern" enough, he was behind the times, he'll never win a national title...blah blah blah.

Most coaches NEVER get to play on the national stage let alone three times in six years.

JT may not be perfect, but he's doing something right.

I'm not one to bash any Buckeye, not even a former coach. But it is hard not to compare this coach to his immediate predecessor.

How many Buckeyes turned down 1st-round-money during the previous "administration"?

We've had more guys than that turn down 1st-round-money THIS YEAR.

What kind of leadership does it take to create an environment that YOUNG men prefer to remain in rather than to leave and become millionaires?

DBB, I was going to post something similar in the "who would you not want your kid to play for thread" We as fans of tOSU have been blessed by coaches who showed true concern and love for their players. Woody was in a class of his own as you'd be hard pressed to hear any of his players say anything bad about him. Coach Bruce although not a great recruiter had his players playing their hearts out for him against scUM his last year, a sure sign of their respect and love for him.

Bruce's successor and JT predecessor while a good human being and outstanding recruiter did not seem to garner such respect.

And now with Jim Tressel, we see another coach who's players seem to love and respect at levels approaching Woodyesque.

Seeing some of the fellows ND and TSUN fans have had to endure and are still enduring, or just starting to, makes me glad I was born into a family where love for our Buckeyes was not only encouraged but nearly demanded.

Dispatch

While Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was in Eden Prairie, Minn., this week visiting recruit Willie Mobley, he asked Mobley to introduce him to another Eden Prairie student-athlete, Melissa Feste. Feste has committed to the Buckeyes to play women's hockey.
Mobley found Feste in a physical education class and introduced her to Tressel, who gave her his card and told her to call him if she needed assistance when she arrives in Columbus.

That's just awesome. You know he means it too. Once again...as a parent, that's the kind of guy I want my son to play for. Class act, father figure, mentor! So nice to have him represent The Ohio State University with such class. It's not just about winning games folks. It's about developing these young kids into young men of good character. It's starts with the head coach and I think we all agree, JT leads the way.

I've heard JT talk several times since the NC game and he never makes excuses or tries to sell things to the public like other coaches. So many coaches out there seem to whine and complain. I won't go into details, but you all know who they are. JT doesn't need to. He doesn't stoop to that level.

I'm just proud to root for a team that has a guy like Jim at the healm. Sometimes when the Bucks drop a game, I have to remind myself of that. Go over to the Josh Jenkins thread and listen to him in that interview if you need a reminder. :)

As always...GO BUCKS!

The quote by Coach Jim Tressel of "THERE'S A WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE THAT DONT REALLY HAVE MUCH UNDERSTAND OF WHAT IT TAKES TO BE GOO AT
THIS GAME, BUT YET LOVE TO HAVE OPINIONS." That's pretty good and I am wondering now when he said that. Was this during a press conference or after the game with LSU? Just curious is all. Thanks.

Football Coach Les Miles Rating - LSU

Interesting site. Look at a guy like Les Miles and player opinion and then what OSU players think of Jim Tressel. I was hoping Pete would be on there, but from what I here players love him. Tressel is an impressive guy. So humble and just incredibly workman like in his approach. I have a ton of respect for what he has done and how he goes about doing it

I've seen this site thrown around a lot lately...and while it does provide some decent perspective, it hasn't been updated in over 3 years and who knows how reliable it is in the first place. Who knows what kind of ratings the coaches would have 3+ years later. Just sayin'

I don't know, that site just doesn't scream "credibility" to me and I'd rather look at JT's (and other coaches) character and coaching ability by sticking to what we know for sure. The stories we read in the paper of JT helping players, or visiting a women's hockey team recruit, and the way he carries himself in public...those are enough for me to decide that Jim Tressel is a good man.
