Joining a Frat at OSU?

Join one. I pledged ATO at Florida my sophomore year, and it was the best thing I did at Florida. Lots of fun, lots of buddies, I knew someone in most of my classes, be it Brothers, Little Sisters, or girlfriends of Brothers. We had a library of old tests to study from, which helped. We had awesome parties, fraternity sports leagues, did I mention awesome parties? The food was great, and cheaper than the school plan or eating at home.

It was one of the few fraternities that was not on fraternity row, but right across the street from the administration building, which was great for registration and drop add (pre-online registration ) It was also closer to the buildings where the first and second year core courses were held, giving you time to get to and from class and still make lunch.

Best of all, it was a good group of guys. Not rich or stuck up snobs, but a weird group of stoner/surfers, Polk County rednecks, Dade County sophisticates, and everything in between. Some were from famous families; Earl Morrel's son was a brother, as was Senator Lawton Chile's son. Nobody gave a [censored] who your family was, or how much money you had. A lot of guys were waiters or bus boys at sororities to pay for their dues.

So I'd join not because of any other reason than you like the guys you met. Join because you want to hang around with some funny assholes like yourself for four years, and to have friends for the rest of your life.

Yea right :tongue2:

You've never met the "Polk County Primitives", as we called them - or the "East Coast Toke Team", the Brevard County pothead surfers.

We were a lot of things, but rich and stuck up was not one of our gigs. If you have preconceptions about the type of person who is in a fraternity, then you can usually confirm any view. But when I was there and we had rush, nobody gave a [censored] about legacies, or family ties, or highschool you came from: we just wanted somebody who was not an obvious asshole who would get along with the mob that was us.

Our house did look like the Omega House from Animal House though. :p

That would be a much better nickname for the minor league baseball team. Manatees are fucking lame.

Animal House----"do you mind if we dance with yo dates?"

That scene reminded me of an after hours (or was it 'no hours?') rib joint on the east side of Columbus, in the midst of the railroad tracks, Jayvan's??? You brought your own beer and placed it under your chair. the place was noisy, gritty, dim and I was glad I couldn't see what the kitchen looked like. The ribs were incredible, dry, spicy and then two great sauces to choose from; one red and one road kill yellow gray.. we arrived there at something approaching 4 in the AM following hell week and I kept waiting for someone to approach the table and say, "Do you mind if'n we help ourselves to yo beer?"

Anybody know if Jayvan's still exists? I might consider carry out 'cause they sure wuz some great ribs.

the connections after my time at OSU.

connections are (or at least can be) HUGE.

I'm a Delta Sigma Phi alum

alumni from our chapter includes a former state senator, a current state senator, several business owners, etc.

plus the contacts you'll make from other fraternities as well.

Of course I went to a school much smaller than OSU, but I got to know quite a few guys from "rival" fraternities who also have gone on to places that can be good to have connections (like cops, lawyers, and yet another State Senator).

Luckily I've never need said connections yet, but it is good to have them.

Both guys I know who are currently in State office representing this area are easily accessible to me. I've spoken to both about different issues around here. Both have been to my house in the aftermath of hurricanes to see how things went. One of them was even on our levee helping sandbag when it busted for Rita in '05.
