im looking at purchasing one.

size. how big?
price. is thier a diff between the ones that are three times as much for similar capacity (size)? or should i just by the cheap version figuring if it breaks twice i make out better? (ignoring the time value of money for nybuck and you econ guys)

personal exxperience of you guys would be nice.

what id use it for. a few spreadsheets, a word doc or two. maybe a couple of ppt presentations. basically simple uses. im willing to not have it have my enitre life on it. basically i want something that i can carry around with a few essential documents i want to share. or at this point can they carry a ton?

i really have no idea.

thanks guys

Sounds as though you don't need much capacity, and can probably go for something inexpensive.

Not sure it's worth the trouble, but you could create a temporary folder and copy into it as much as you think you would need to transport. Check the folder size, and double or triple it. Or if they're in pretty much one place now, check the space there.

Unless your PowerPoint files are huge, I'm guessing one of the smaller drives would be fine.

define smaller?

512?
1g?
2g?

i think 8g sounds crazy.

brand suggestions?

i guess im asking if im overlooking uses that are worth the additional expense?

i guess im openly admitting im not tech saavy and i know some of you guys here really are. i mean the prices seem to go from 8 or so to 150.

1GB sounds like sufficient overkill for your needs, but even doubling that amount can be done at a reasonable price. Here are some inexpensive ones at newegg.

I don't personally worry much about brand names, since my flash drive is backed up regularly, but no problems with either the 512MB SanDisk Cruzer I've been using for at least two years or the newer 1GB PNY. I back up entire folder trees and transfer huge graphic, video, and audio files.

Get the cheap small ones. You can find them anywhere, hell, I use two that my daughter got with a textbook package for a class. There tough as hell and you really can carry alot on them. My son transfers home work constantly from comp. to comp. with them with no problems.

If you have a Microcenter nearby, they have generic 1 GB for $10 and 2 GB for $16 everyday.

Good call... I bought the 2GB one a couple of months ago and it works well for what I need it to do. The old saying applies though: You get what you pay for... the drive is kind of slow if you are saving large or a lot of files to it. I'm not that worried about speed so it doesn't affect me that much, I just have to wait a little longer. In your case though (documents, PP presentations) that shouldn't be too much of an issue.

i talked to a techie that i normally do some business with. he says he can get me 4gigs for about $15. i gave him a softverbal. granted hes not my #1 guy and maybe ill wait till signing day to back out and decommitt. but i think from what you guys are saying that is a good deal.

What do you need it for?

Better question, do you have an iPod? You can setup the disk mode on the iPod and use it for portable storage, that's what I do. Jump drives are nice, but I like to keep the pockets light.

We'll just have to trust the coaches that you'll make the right decision.
