Former Ohio State basketball player and Westerville native June Brewer Daugherty died Monday at her home in Boise, Idaho.
She was to turn 65 next week.
Cause of death for the two-time OSU captain is not known, reports news site BoiseDev.com. However, Daugherty battled a heart condition and had served as a spokesperson for the Heart Hope Institute and the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association.
Daugherty's husband posted a tribute message to Facebook.
"Those who knew her knew how special and spectacular she was," Mike Daugherty wrote. "She was the greatest mother, lover and friend. She had zero intolerance except for those who were hateful and intolerant. The world is a lesser place starting on Tuesday."
Daugherty started every single game she played during her four years at Ohio State from 1974-78, and she holds the school record for career field-goal percentage (.621) as well as the single-game record for blocked shots (12 against Michigan State on Feb. 7, 1976).
Following her All-American senior season, Daugherty played professionally in France for four years and then entered the coaching ranks.
With stops at Boise State, Washington and Washington State, she amassed over 400 wins as a head coach at the Division I level.
She retired in 2007 with a combined record of 443-431.
Daugherty was inducted into the Ohio State Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.
In addition to her husband, she leaves behind twin children, Doc and Breanne.
