K Aaron Pettrey (Las Vegas Locos - UFL)

I'm really hoping Aaron regains his starting position. He gets the ball up high very quickly, and we had way too many blocked FG's last season. One of those really changed the momentum of a very important game last season. :wink2:

Rough day for Pettrey in kicking showdown

As much as Aaron Pettrey considers Ryan Pretorius a friend, he left no mystery about his motive yesterday. He wanted to walk into Ohio Stadium and knock Pretorius off the top of the Ohio State kicking ladder.

It didn't happen. It was Pettrey-Pretorius Duel In the 'Shoe III, and for the second straight year, Pretorius came out on top, though neither had a spectacular day.

"I want to be the guy out here. I wanted to have as good a day as I could, and just show the coaches that I can still put 'em through," Pettrey said.

Instead, he had a horrendous start. Two of his first three field-goal attempts were blocked, by Donald Washington and Kurt Coleman; he missed the other.

"I would have loved to have come out here and have a good day, because me and Ryan have been even all camp," Pettrey said. "I would have loved to have had a day like I did two years ago and not miss."

Buckeyes' Pettrey happy to be kicking once again

Published:Tuesday, November 4, 2008

His field goals accounted for all of Ohio State?s points against Penn State.
Amid the gloom in the aftermath of Ohio State?s loss to Penn State, there was a bloom that could not be overlooked. Aaron Pettrey was dead-solid perfect on his two field-goal tries.
Pettrey, who was the No.1 kicker as a redshirt freshman three years ago only to lose the job to Ryan Pretorius in preseason the two years since, scored all of OSU?s points in a 13-6 loss.
That does not mean that Pettrey has reclaimed the full-time kicking job. Coach Jim Tressel said he still expects Pretorius to be the choice for extra points and for field goals of 36 yards in length or closer as the Buckeyes head into the three-game homestretch starting with a trip to Northwestern on Saturday.

But considering the background player Pettrey had become since a pulled groin muscle blunted his effort in August 2007, the fact he was the kicker of record against Penn State spoke volumes.
"I was just happy that everybody has confidence in me again in a big game, and that I can come through for them," Pettrey said.
Josh Huston knows how Pettrey feels. He is a former OSU kicker who had his own deep down years during the Mike Nugent era before re-emerging his senior season as the starter. He watched intently as Pettrey seized the moment against Penn State; his field goals, of 41 and 36 yards, were struck hard, high and true.
"It told me that when he went out there he had the mentality of 'I'm going to trust my form, I'm going to swing through, and I'm going to bang it right down the middle,' " Huston said. "You could tell that he wasn't nervous, trying to guide the ball through there. He was swinging, just like he was in practice, and letting it rip.
"Hopefully he can continue to do that."

Senior Aaron Pettrey had a strong showing in the kick scrimmage.

It's not just that Aaron Pettrey is the No. 1 kicker at Ohio State this spring. It's more that, finally, everyone else on the team seems to know it.

So maybe what happened in Ohio Stadium yesterday was destiny. The senior's 34-yard field goal -- set up by a 25-yard punt return by DeVier Posey -- won the this year's spring practice kick scrimmage for the Scarlet, 30-27.

"I haven't kicked a game-winning field goal since I've been here, and I know this was a scrimmage, but it felt good," Pettrey said.

He's felt that way for a while, actually, since early last season. That's when coach Jim Tressel started relying on him again for long field goal attempts while Ryan Pretorius handled the shorter ones and extra points. With Pretorius gone, Pettrey assumed the lead, a status he had lost before the 2007 season after being the No. 1 kicker in 2006.

Pettrey solidified his hold on the position yesterday over freshman kicker Ben Buchanan (Westerville Central) and former pro soccer player Devin Barclay.

"He's been here for four years and you can see he's carrying himself as a leader," Barclay said.

Pettrey missed his first field goal attempt, from 53 yards, then made his next one, from 57. From that point on, he didn't miss, making nine in a row.

That's not to say all went smoothly, because he and the Scarlet suffered back-to-back blocks by Cameron Heyward and Anderson Russell just when they could have clinched the win in regulation of the scrimmage format.

And neither Barclay nor Buchanan, both kicking for the Gray, missed on a try that wasn't blocked. But in the end, the stage was set for Pettrey when Orhian Johnson dashed in to block what could have been a 53-yard winner by Barclay.

"I definitely wanted to make a point and just show the coaches they can put their trust in me," Pettrey said.
