K Jake Seibert (transfer to Northern Illinois)

JAKE SEIBERT, K
Ohio State’s first scholarship recruit at kicker in four years, Seibert will work on honing his craft this year while being groomed to succeed the Buckeyes’ current starting kicker, Blake Haubeil, in 2021.

Because the Buckeyes are currently over 85 scholarships, Seibert is expected to grayshirt as a true freshman – meaning he won’t be on scholarship until 2021 – but he’s firmly expected to be Ohio State’s future at the position, as he arrives in Columbus from Cincinnati’s La Salle High School as the second-ranked kicker in the class of 2020.

On Tuesday, Day wasn’t willing to make a declaration on whether or not Haubeil will be available Saturday when the Buckeyes face Rutgers.

“I don't know exactly how long it's going to be with Blake, if he'll be ready tomorrow or it's kind of a day-to-day thing,” Day said.

Should Haubeil remained sidelined, DiMaccio and freshman Jake Seibert would be the candidates to fill in against the Scarlet Knights.

DiMaccio, in his third year at Ohio State, is 5-for-6 in his career on extra points. Last week’s two attempts were his first field goal attempts as a Buckeye.

Seibert, a true freshman, did not travel with the team last week and has not attempted a kick yet. However, he’s in line to replace Haubeil next year as Ohio State’s kicker. He’s grayshirting this season, meaning he’s a walk-on right now but is in line to have a scholarship next year.

“Jake's definitely an option,” Day said. “He came here for a reason. Especially now with the rule where this year really doesn't count (for eligibility purposes), he's definitely an option.”

Just sayin': Apparently there is a chance Jake Seibert may see place kicking duty this weekend.

better to get his feet wet now when the kicks don't have as much pressure attached to them to get some game experience. I'd imagine it would be a lot easier of a situation to come in and kick an extra point or 40 yard fg vs. Rutgers in a game you're up by 35 rather than a CFP semi-final with the game on the line.

While Seibert is grayshirting this season, meaning he won't be placed on scholarship until next season, he's still eligible to play this year – and since everyone gets a free year of eligibility this year, the Buckeyes don't have to worry about preserving his redshirt.

“Jake's definitely an option,” Day said Tuesday. “He came here for a reason. Especially now with the rule where this year really doesn't count (for eligibility purposes), he's definitely an option.”

Other Ohio State freshmen who made their debuts against Rutgers included kicker Jake Seibert, who did not attempt a field goal but handled all seven of the Buckeyes’ extra points in place of Blake Haubeil, who was unavailable for the game due to a groin injury.

Just sayin': I'll go put on a limb here and predict he'll be a pretty good place kicker for the next 4 years.
