Kelvin Sampson (HC Houston Cougars)

Considering that most years he has almost zero in-state talent to recruit, Sampson does a phenomenal job. Oklahoma reeled in a really good recruiting class this year, I wonder if many of them will ask for a release to go to Indiana. I wonder why the Hoosiers didn't go after Alford harder? Either way, excellent hire.

What has Alford done at Iowa? He's the most overrated coach in the Big 10. If he wasn't such a "star" player, nobody would even care about him.

The guy has a .721 winning percentage and avgs over 23 wins a season.

Let me clarify when I said setting the world on fire, yes he has won in the Big 12 but their are numerous admitted NCAA violations hanging over that program right now......I am merely suprised they are bringing in a coach to, what the Indiana people still view as one of the best jobs in the country. I know they want to sever ties with anyone associated with Knight, but they bringing in a coach who wins, but obviously has some issues following NCAA rules.

2 Big 10 tourney titles, and a consistently competetive team in the Big 10, w/ zero recruiting base-although he gets those Iowa farm boys to play hard for him-Horner and Brunner, etc. The only real strike against him was his shameful handling of the Pierre Pierce situation.

I'd be curious to see what the smug, arrogant IU fans have to say now. I think they are taking a huge gamble on their reputation with Sampson.

which is nice for Iowa, not for IU. They can't hold out for another Bob Knight, but the history is too rich for Alford iMO.

Sampson is a big-time mixed bag, and controversial...his best work was probably at Washington State, where he basically worked a brief miracle before moving on. He has won a lot at Oklahoma, though some say his teams underachieve at tournament time. The real controversy is that he has had violations, and that the graduation rates, especially at OU, have been pitiful. We'll see how the rich IU alumni react, and how much patience they will have.

sampson is one of the top 5 winningest coaches in d1 over the last ten years, i believe it is #3. he is a great coach and has a style much like that of tom izzo. That said, I can't stand the guy. His strange affinity for denim shirts should be enough to scratch him off your wish list

I do not believe it has been established that Alford didn't want the IU job.

There is no way the job wasn't floated to the Alford camp, whatever it might be. They just had to gauge his interest, no way they couldn't have. I can't imagine a scenario where they would make the hire and not know where they stood with Alford, others for that matter.

actually now that asked a sooner alumn about that stat i am a liar....according to the sooner fan in the office sampson is one of three coaches to win 20 or more games for over ten straight seasons...the other two are jim calhoun and coach k.....this is second hand so feel free to prove me wrong, i would love to throw this back in the sooners face

i am assuming that there must be some sort of time constraint on that stat as i am sure that john wooden did it
