Valerie Harper, who parlayed a sidekick role as the leading lady’s unprepossessing best friend on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” into a star turn of her own in the hit sitcom “Rhoda,” died on Friday. She was 80.

The death was confirmed by her daughter, Cristina Cacciotti. She did not say where Ms. Harper died.

Ms. Harper’s husband, Tony Cacciotti, announced on Facebook in July that he had decided not to move Ms. Harper into hospice care, as her doctors had recommended. She had leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, in which cancer cells invade the fluid-filled membrane surrounding the brain.

Agreed. No real monster hits but plenty of really good rock songs. I remember when "Baby Hold On" came out in '78 and thought, "This is a distinct sound." Never was a super fan, but sure enough when his Greatest Hits CD came out I promptly bought it...

Ironic story, my uncle’s biological father is Eddie Money. He wasn’t exactly the most invested into raising a child at the time, so my grandparents stepped up big time.

Robert Hunter, songwriter for Grateful Dead, has died at age 78

Robert Hunter, the man behind the poetic and mystical words for many of the Grateful Dead's finest songs, has died at age 78. Hunter died Monday at his Northern California home with his wife, Maureen, at his side, former Grateful Dead publicist Dennis McNally told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The family did not release a cause of death.

"We loved Bob Hunter and will miss him unimaginably," Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart said, adding the lyricist was "a visionary wordsmith extraordinaire."

Although proficient in a number of instruments including guitar, violin, cello and trumpet, Hunter never appeared on stage with the Grateful Dead during the group's 30-year run that ended with the 1995 death of lead guitarist Jerry Garcia, his principal songwriting partner.

.
Eventually, Hunter would write for all of the group's members, and when the Grateful Dead was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 he was included as the lyricist.

He and Garcia were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015.
