LB Alex “Sonny” Styles (Official Thread)

love his potential but need to see a consistent effort on the field. Physical talent is beyond elite but want to see those game tilting plays and influence passing games.
I think there’s a chance we misuse him here.

He’s such a gifted kid but he’s a very very big safety and maybe not big enough to play LB right now.

I wish they’d move him to LB, give him 6k calories a day, and let him attack at 250 pounds.

You don't have to have a lineman level diet in order to make a difference as a plus sized safety. You can walk down as a nickel and dime backer in college football against all the 01, 10 and 11 personnel you're going to see. 5th and 6th DBs are starters in the modern game.

Why would he need to be 250lbs? That doesn't make any sense.

If you want to believe the Ohio State media guide, he's only 5-7 lbs lighter than what Eichenberg weighed last year and he was around the same weight as Chambers was/is.

The days of the big body edge LB are over.

I wouldn't go that far, especially depending on what you define as "big body". TJ Watt is 255ish.

Not every 2pt edge is Micah Parsons who, while incredibly effective at what he does, tends to give up a bit of ground against the run at times. That's the trade off.

I still go back to Thad. He was fantastic in that role for the fronts we run those years playing that odd, standup edge. While I would have liked more first step twitch, and it sure would have helped him have a more successful and longer NFL career.

I think of another Big Ten name - Tamba Hali, who was a bigger body playing that same role for KC for a lot of years. There is absolutely still a place for them in the modern game.

He is 6 foot 5.

If he’s anything between 228-240 that’s pretty damn light for a kid that tall.

Aside from being absurdly talented, Downs coming aboard made Styles to LB such an easy decision. Kid outgrew safety and still has room on the frame, he'll be electric if he learns the position.

Oh for sure Downs was the tipping point for the move. Makes sense for everyone involved. Safety room is deeeep, LB corps could use another stud, and Sonny just has a big frame (whether he likes it or not). Styles has issues most men would dream of having “ohh no, I’m too tall, putting on too much muscle.” lol
