Former Ohio State linebacker Anthony Schlegel returned to the football team as an assistant strength and conditioning coach Monday, team spokeswoman Shelly Poe said.

Schlegel is replacing Doug Davis, who left with former OSU assistant head coach and wide receivers coach Darrell Hazell, to be the strength and conditioning coach for Kent State.

By Tuesday afternoon, Schlegel had already worked up a sweat.

Schlegel emerged from the weight room, dripping with perspiration, to address members of the media in the lobby of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Tuesday. The former Buckeye letter winner (2004, 2005) and NFL product spoke about joining head coach Jim Tressel's staff.

"I knew everybody up there, so I was like, ?I'm gonna call them up and tell them I'm interested in this opportunity, and I would love to come back and be a part of this program,'" Schlegel said. "I'm truly excited."

Marcus Freeman was Schlegel's teammate and fellow linebacker during OSU's 2004 and 2005 seasons. Freeman, who was a graduate assistant with OSU the last two years before accepting a job as Kent State's linebackers coach in December, expressed satisfaction in seeing Schlegel return to assist the OSU football team.

"Schlegel was the ultimate teammate," Freeman told The Lantern on Monday. "He really appreciated being a Buckeye; he was always excited. I'm sure he's going to be a great teacher."

Freeman also thinks Schlegel is a perfect fit for the overlooked but significant role of strength coach.

"A lot of people don't realize that during the offseason, players spend the majority of their time in the gym," Freeman said. "Schlegel is going to spend more time with those guys than any other coach. He is a motivator, and he will help the kids perform."

Despite his prolonged absence from campus, Schlegel hasn't forgotten his OSU roots. He referenced former coach Woody Hayes' famous, "You win with people," mantra while explaining his reasoning for returning to Columbus.

"Woody always said that you win with people," Schlegel said. "You want to be with people that have your same values. That's why this program wins all the time, because they win with people."

Schlegel talks about STANK!

blocko.gif
Stank you, sir. Former Buckeye linebacker Anthony Schlegel was named an assistant S&C coach earlier this week and he wasted little time endearing himself to Buckeye fans everywhere. Asked by reporters what some about some of his goals at Ohio State, he offered up this gem:
“I want to teach them to have the stank, so when they go on the field they are there to dominate people. It’s that attitude and the stank, that’s what I’m trying to feed them.”
What's "stank", you say?
“Hunting hogs in Texas, a big boar hog has a stank. You know that he’s there because of the smell. When you go on the field or you walk by them, I want people to know these guys have the stank and they are here to dominate for 60 minutes. I just want that to be contagious so they can get a whiff of that."
PERFECT.

Former Ohio State linebacker Anthony Schlegel tackles Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton in a 2005 game. Schlegel played two seasons in the NFL and returned to Ohio State in 2011 as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Time and Change is a series at BuckeyeNation where we chat with former Ohio State athletes.

Anthony Schlegel, 31, was undoubtedly a character during his time at Ohio State.

A linebacker with a motor that didn't stop, the transfer from the United States Air Force Academy played in every game in 2004 for Ohio State and started seven of them.

He recorded 84 tackles, 10? of them for loss, and had 3? sacks despite suffering a torn medial collateral ligament midway through the season. As a senior in 2005, his 82 tackles ranked second on the team for the nation's top-ranked rushing defense.

A third-round draft pick by the New York Jets in the 2006 NFL draft, Schlegel played at the highest level until 2008 he also played with the Cincinnati Bengals before ending his professional career as a member of the Florida Tuskers in the United Football League.

He is married with two sons and a daughter and lives in Worthington, Ohio. Schlegel is an assistant strength and conditioning coach for Ohio State's football team.

BuckeyeNation caught up with Schlegel and talked to him about the pull of the game, what it's like to be a coach and the new regime's relationship with the team's alumni.

BN: After a few years as a professional, you're back at Ohio State. Why the pull to come back to Columbus?

Schlegel: That's where I played. I've known the coaches for a long time. Guys that I played with are there. I love the community. If I wasn't living in Texas [where he went to high schoo], I'd want to be living in central Ohio.

BN: What lessons did Jim Tressel teach you that you use in your everyday life?

Schlegel: It's all about relationships. That's what made him so great. It's stuck with us all the time. It's all about good relationships with the kids on the team. It's to be a mentor and somebody they can talk to, but also it's also about getting in their face and being a coach. Those are the relationships they'll take with them forever. That's what it's all about. You want to give back to the kids.

Intersting tidbit (at least to me)....

Bobby Carpenter was just saying on 97.1 that Schlegs is partly responsible for Mike Mitchell and Dontre Wilson coming to Cbus. Obviously he is also from the Dallas area and even started his HS career at DeSoto.
