LB Freddie Lenix (Cincinnati signee; transfer to Notre Dame College)

There isn't one side that is right here, tho you (mili) also made it sound like there was earlier in the discussion.

The fact is there are studs that get stuck behind a deep depth chart and fall in the draft ratings. Yes certain players jump up higher based on doing well on a famous team, but plenty of others get drafted later or not at all because they were backups.

As for expecting Lenix to start at LB, I'm high on him too but that's a little bit too kind. He has put on a good amount of muscle and might be able to become a Cie Grant type, but he still has a lot of growing to do. It is still very possible he becomes a safety, which might be our deepest position other than WR.

Kerr can't even find the field here, but we assume that Lenix will eventually be a starter for us...big difference. A starting LB for Ohio State has a better chance at getting drafted than a "star" at a lesser school.

If the above statement is true, then you're correct. However, Lenix would be almost guaranteed to start multiple years at Cincinnati, but may never start at OSU.

My view is that for the exceptional talents, it doesn't really matter where a person goes to school. If you are one of the top 20 players in the nation, you'll be a first round draft pick.

However, for the mediocre prospects it could make a huge difference. My guess is that the NFL is will to give guys who played for a power school, in a power conference, against great competition a try before they give an equally suited player at a poor program a try.

CleveBucks: Totally agree on the point about his being a near lock to start at Cincinnati. But even so, he still has to weigh the risk/reward potential here. I think he has the potential to start at least a year here, and that would be worth multiple years at Cincy, especially if he were to shine that year he started here.

18thAveBuck: Well said. As I've said several times now, they are the exceptions, and like you said, the very cream of the crop will get drafted no matter where they play. For the other 95% of the recruits, where they play ball makes the big difference. Lenix is in that 95% now, although he may end up being in that top 5% by the time all is said and done. And even if he is in that top 5% and ends up being a first-round pick, being an All-American at Ohio State vice at Cincinnati or some other mid-tier school could make the difference between being the first LB picked or the second LB picked--and also being picked several positions higher overall--which comes out to millions of dollars.

Lenix confirms his plans to attend a community college in the Cleveland area and then join the Buckeyes in the spring quarter.

I apologize for my ignorance. I know a gray shirt doesn't count against our scholarships, so is it basically equivalent to Freddie becoming a 2006 recruit? Also, if he is accepted in the spring, I assume he can participate in spring drills....right? Is he allowed to hang around this year? Practices, on the sidelines at games, team meetings,....

Thanks. Obviously, this is unfortunate. I was probably looking forward to Lenix playing more than anyone else in the class. With his speed and size, he could be a HUGE HITTING safety (a la Doss) or a lightning fast OLB (kind of like a faster Joe Cooper). One things for sure, he's going to be a monster on Special Teams.

It always seems like these kids put on 20 pounds when they get into a S&C program like tOSU's. A 230 pound OLB who can run 100 meters in less than 11 seconds??? WTF!

LB Freddie Lenix: Lenix is the speed merchant as advertised. We saw him in the North-South game and the South could muster no running game against the defense that Lenix was a part of. We don't think he is big enough right now to play linebacker, but could grow into that position. If not, he has plenty of speed to be an exceptional safety or even running back. He will "grayshirt" and is enrolled at Cuyahoga Community College to get his academics in order.
