Update from Brandon Castel O-zone

I know I mentioned how Simon got beasted by Joe Hale in the band war drill, but seriously, Simon is getting more and more ripped by the day. He has to be the only guy his size with an 8-pack.
I would say at this point he looks a lot more like a defensive end than a tackle. He is lean and strong, and I have to imagine he will play more outside this year at strongside end now that Cam Heyward is gone......

You, that seems to be Ohio State's style on defense. No matter the year we have, we always seem to have some sort of All-American defensive star after one leaves - in Tressel's tenure:

- Mike Doss
- AJ Hawk
- James Laurinaitis
- Cam Heyward
- Jon Simon?

Simon has all the physical tools of Gholston but more elusive and flexible. Can't wait to see him in action this season. The two young guys that seem to amaze me in their physical tools are both Simon and Nathan Williams - studs!

Simon says: Ohio State football defense ready for Spring Game
By Adam Hawkins

Published: Sunday, April 17, 2011

Nearly everyone in the world of college football is aware of the impending suspensions of star offensive players Terrelle Pryor and Dan Herron on the Ohio State football team. However, the defense, which was ranked No. 2 in total defense last season, must replace seven starters for the upcoming season.

Defensive lineman Cameron Heyward is expected to be drafted at the end of the first round in this month's NFL draft, and the Buckeyes must also replace starting cornerbacks Chimdi Chekwa and Devon Torrence.

With all new starters and just a week left before the Spring Game, the defense dominated the OSU offense in Saturday's scrimmage, forcing five turnovers and not allowing a single touchdown.

Although the offense struggled, junior defensive lineman John Simon said he is not worried about its performance when the season begins.

"We see them in practice every day, and we know the offense is very good," Simon said. "I just think all week we've focused on relaxing a little bit and just playing together, and I think it paid off."

Simon said losing Heyward is a huge loss for the defense, but he has been encouraged by its performance this spring.

"Seeing a lot of the young guys improve and get better every day and just seeing the excitement even though we aren't working toward a big game or anything," Simon said. "Just seeing the excitement and passion we have."

I'm here to Say I went to highschool with John Simon and we played football together. He got the Strentgh and Dishonor tattoo when we were seniors and the "Y" Youngstown tattoo after his freshman year at Osu. He got both tattoos at Squirleys in Hubbard. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

How does your resume compare to Robert Rose's? :wink2:

Ohio State football: Father disputes Simon's inclusion in 'SI' article
Friday, June 3, 2011
By Tim May

The father of Ohio State football player John Simon said he is angry about his son being mentioned in a Sports Illustrated article this week as one of the Buckeyes alleged to have dealt memorabilia for tattoos or other considerations.

The elder Simon, also named John, denied his son was involved.

"It's just more or less disbelief on how something like that can come out, how a reputable publication can write something like that without any proof at all," the elder Simon said. "He was never there, never even close to the place. He didn't get his tattoos from there; he got them from a place here in his hometown (Youngstown)."

The junior defensive end and eight other players reportedly were interviewed in the past couple of days by Ohio State compliance personnel and NCAA investigators. Five Buckeyes already have been suspended five games each for similar NCAA violations: quarterback Terrelle Pryor, running back Daniel Herron, receiver DeVier Posey, left tackle Mike Adams and defensive end Solomon Thomas.

The accused players have not been made available to the media this week.

"I knew he hadn't done it, and when I texted him (Monday), I asked, 'What can we do to fight this?'" the elder Simon said. "By that time, his support group of coaches and others were already involved with him, so he was in good hands."
