Postgame quote, from UFM, on why John Simon didn't play

I own one Ohio State jersey- a #45 Archie Griffin.

I am now shopping for a #54, and it's not (just) because I'm a Bryce Haynes fan.

He did sneak into the game and was on the field for about 1 play before he was caught and scolded by Urban

Buckeyes know they can rely on Simon

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- John Simon is genuinely flattered by the tribute, even if it pains him to hear it repeated.

When asked about the term "Tebowish," which new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer used to describe Simon during spring practice, Simon expresses his gratitude. Then he steers the conversation away from himself like he steers offensive linemen out of his rushing lanes.

Meyer hasn't coached Simon in a game and won't for another four-plus months, but the coach already places the Buckeyes senior defensive end in an exclusive group that includes Meyer's most successful player, former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.

"Just to be characterized with someone who has such high integrity, that means a lot to me," Simon recently told ESPN.com. "But really, I'm just coming in here every day and doing the best I can."

Is Simon a Tebow fan?

"Absolutely," he said. "He's a tremendous athlete, tremendous person. So to be compared to someone like that is a great honor. I appreciate what [Meyer] says. But I'm just coming in every day doing what I can to help. It's a team sport."

The Freak List: The 10 craziest athletes in college football
By Bruce Feldman | CBSSports.com College Football Insider

5. John Simon, Ohio State, DL: It seems like the Youngstown product has been on this list dating back to the days of Manny Lawson/Vernon Davis. As a 16-year-old, Simon could do 31 reps at 225 when he was turning heads at Cardinal Mooney High, setting weight room records for that storied Ohio prep program. There are heftier D-linemen, but perhaps none who are as strong pound-for-pound. The 6-2, 270-pound Simon is the definition of the word powerhouse. His relentless approach is just as evident on the field as it is in the weight room. "Donald Duck could be the strength coach if John Simon were the only guy in the weight room," said Urban Meyer. According to Mickey Marotti, who has trained more than his share of Freaks in his days at Florida, Simon benched 225 38 times, timed a 4.6 40 and broad jumped more than 10 feet, but the new Buckeyes strength coach says the Freakiest thing about the defensive tackle is his weight room intensity. And, it's that which makes just as big of an impact on his teammates 365 days a year as it does on his opponents on game day.

Linebacker John Simon is expected to play a big role for the Buckeyes this season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State coach Urban Meyer was at the New York Jets' practice Thursday morning, watching Tim Tebow, his former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at Florida. Then Meyer returned to Woody Hayes Athletic Center, where just outside his office window, his other Tebow was talking to reporters as several Buckeyes conducted interviews for a final time before the end of classes.

That was John Simon.

John Simon has been called a freak a lot, almost since he arrived at Ohio State as a weight-room addict who played immediately on the defensive line as a freshman. But among the more interesting things Meyer has done since his hiring almost six months ago is to put Simon in context.

Simon is strong. Simon is focused. But it took Meyer to call him "Tebowish."

By doing that last month, Meyer made it clear how much Simon is capable of -- and how critical the senior is to the success of the Buckeyes in what will be Simon's last season in Columbus and Meyer's first.

So is he like Tebow?

"That's a hard question to answer since I never met him, but with his character and with coach Meyer calling me 'Tebowish,' that means a lot," Simon said. "That's exciting, and not just for how great of a football player he was but the kind of person he was also."
