LB Marcus Freeman (HC Notre Dame, Constant Backtracker)

Freeman has not played well. In his defense, he is young, played only on special teams in 2004, and has made only 2 starts. Freeman would be better at WLB in the base defense so he can use his speed and athletic ability. Who knows, practically everybody was all over Lauerinitais after one game and we saw what he did against Texas. Maybe Freeman will have one of those break out games against Cincinnati or Penn State.
Yeah, I've been confused about this for a while. Why isn't a guy with Freeman's speed on the Weekside which would seem more like his natural position meaning he would have to shed less blocks from TEs and others and use his better speed to get to the ball carrier. Freeman seems like a natural WILL. I just never understood... but I guess that's why I'm not a coach.

Settle down big guy. I wasn't ripping anyone. I thought my post was pretty reasonable. Without us sitting in a film room, it's hard to point out all of my concerns. He was out of position nearly all night. Was pancaked repeatedly. Looked slow and timid.

But like I said, the kid han't played football in some time, so he could be rusty. He plays a lot, so I have to think he looks good in practice. I'm looking for some perspective from someone who maybe watched him in HS or watches practice.

I edited your first post to make it less harsh. The original version still exists where Mili quoted it, for comparison.

A player struggling is a legitimate topic, but be very careful how negative things are stated. As previously stated, bashing of players is simply not tolerated here.

Timeout with Marcus Freeman

Saturday, September 16, 2006

Who did you look up to as a player when you were a kid?
"It's hard not to say (former Wayne and Ohio State receiver) John Hollins. He was an older guy who had been at our high school and came to Ohio State. You say, 'I want to be like him some day.' Maybe he didn't play the same position, but he's a good guy. He's got good character. And he was a great football player. He was a role model for me."
What are your best assets as a player?
"My speed is one thing. That might be a strong point. But I have my weak points that I need to work on to be a good linebacker here ? work to get off blockers, work on being a sure tackler and being more explosive and physical at the point of attack."

Do you get recognized more now that you're a starter?
"People back home are going to recognize you more and want to talk to you more. I went into my bank and said, 'I'm Marcus Freeman.' People were saying, 'Good luck' and 'Go Bucks.' That comes with being at Ohio State, but it also means you have to watch what you do because people are going to notice. I try to represent the community I came from the best I can."

What's it like going against bruising freshman tailback Chris Wells in practice?
"I see a competitor in Chris Wells. He wants to get on the field ? just like every freshman would. He's behind a great running back in Antonio Pittman, but his time will come."

What's up with the Big Ten taking it on the chin last week with Northwestern losing to Division I-AA New Hampshire and several other near upsets?
"The Big Ten plays some tough teams around the nation. I know when we get into conference play, each team will be ready to go ? and we'll show the world how good we are."

On Hunt's long run, Freeman looked silly. There were a couple other runs to Freeman's side, like off tackle runs, where he was no where to be seen. I don't mean to get on they guy, but I started watching him, and the more I watched, the scarier it was.

Marcus Freeman, sophomore linebacker

On his interception against Iowa

"You want to go out there and make plays. When you play a game like that, it's a confidence booster. It comes along with watching film, going to practice every day and geting used to knowing what you need to do. Having more experience will make you better."

On the depth of the defense

"You have to do your job. When you have a chance to make big plays, you have to take every opportunity you have. You can't coast when you have a starting spot, because at practice, if you mess up, the guy next in line will be waiting."

On teammate Jamario O' Neal

"I think Jamario has been ready since he began playing this year. It's great to see that he has a chance to go out there and prove himself."

On the upcoming Bowling Green game

"We just want to go out and do the best we can. Every team is going to bring their best game to play the number one team and we have to be ready."

On the defense

"We played well against Cincinnati but last week we missed some tackles and missed assignments. You have to give credit to Iowa, but we just have to keep getting better."

On generating turnovers

"The big thing has been the stress that we have put on it in practice. The coaches have been stressing the importance of it everyday and that carries over into the games."

I thought Freeman had his best game as a Buckeye against Minnesota.

Marcus Freeman, sophomore linebacker

On the defense's success

"You have to give the coaches a lot of credit. They continue to put us in the right positions to do things wells. Also, the defensive line has played a major role. They have been putting a lot of pressure on the quarterbacks every week and that makes our job easier."

On preparation

"I am watching film as much now as I did against Texas. The coaches have been stressing the importance of it and it is something the defense as a whole has continued to do."

On the Big Ten's young quarterbacks

"They are very talented, regardless of their age. You know you will continue to see them the next few years, but they are talented right now and we have to prepare for them right now."

On the defense

"We have been getting better each week. Our goal at the end of the season is to be the No. 1 defense in the nation. For now, we just keep trying to get better every day."

On his preseason expectations of the defense

"We had a meeting at the beginning of the year and the coaches continued to tell us we had talent and we could see our potential. We haven't reached our full potential yet this year and we are not the best yet, but we keep getting better."

On peeking in November

"Coach Tressel demands that his teams practice hard. He demands that his teams give 100 percent and he demands that we continue to improve, even through November. By this time of the year we really begin to hit our stride."

On stand-out qualities of Illinois

"Juice Williams. Everything that Illinois does revolves around him. He is a playmaker and he is quick on his feet. The key for us is going to be stopping him."

$Bucknuts

Over on Bucknuts there's an article that mentions Freeman's move to weakside LBer. I don't have a subscription but it looks like it's going to be Freeman at Will, Laurinaitis in the middle and Terry at SAM.

It talks about how Terry has the inside track on the SLB job. Freeman at WLB. Looks like Kerr is the odd man out. Never understood him being at the WLB anyway......
