Leinart And Other Thoughts

A radio host in Cleveland was saying Hawk is/was similar to Wilhelm and he's not starting yet in the NFL. He was more or less implying Hawk will be more like MW in the pros. Speed alone sets him apart, but Hawk has just had IT since he's been in Columbus. Not speed, but IT.

What made Wilhelm a solid player at the college level was his intensity and vision. Hawk has both, plus real speed and plain ol' instincts which set him apart from Matt. As said by several other before, A.J. just knows how to play linebacker. I thought Teddy Bruschi was over-rated in college, but he sure proved me wrong. Hawk will do the same to other naysayers in the pros.

VY has my vote for Heisman. I never did understand why Lienart stayed around another year.

I'm sure the NFL has crazy sex parties too, and I think they would have let him squeeze ballroom dancing into his schedule so he could get his degree.:wink2:

I mean, what possible good could have come out of it? Unless maybe, just maybe, he's actually planning a career in ballroom dancing? :tongue2:

For all the lovin' that Leinart gets, I thought he was below average in the ND game. He missed passes all day long, even before he got the bell rung. Too high, too low, behind receivers, he had them all. Every time I've watched SC, he doesn't feel much pressure, so he has all day to lob those passes to the guys. It seems that they have alot of yac for him.

I wondered how he would react when getting pressured and hit by a great defense. I'm not sure ND's is that defense but they clearly made him look below average. I don't want to hear about that great 4th and long play either. That pass was off as well.

If I'm an NFL gm, no way am I taking Leinart first, not after Saturday. He'll feel heat every week from NFL defenses and I'm starting to think he really may be overrated. Is he going to follow other former SC lefties into the NFL and become like Paul McDonald and Todd Marinovich? Probably not, but I wouldn't take the chance on him. Too many qb's that were great in college have stunk in the NFL. The latest being Joey Harrington.

I agree with most of what you have to say -- Leinart didn't look very good on Saturday, completing just over 50% of his passes. And I wholeheartedly agree (I've been saying it myself for over a year now) that one of the biggest reasons Leinart has had such success is b/c of the protection he receives from his offensive line. NBC put up a stat in the ND game that Leinart has been sacked like 3 or 4 times ALL SEASON. That was probably through 5 and a half games. The guy faces no pressure. As comparison, Drew Stanton puts up better numbers and was sacked by us 12 times IN ONE GAME. That being said, I think he'll be decent in the NFL (certainly better than Marinovich and probably better than Harrington), but he won't be great when he consistently faces NFL pressure.

We may all agree that Leinart is not deserving the Heisman this year, but I don't think the media agrees. From what I've heard in my bits and pieces from listening to the radio, Leinart single-handedly won the game against ND. Leinart called the audible on 4th and 9 that got the first down, and Leinart called for the QB sneak on the goal line. The media forgets that USC is lucky that he didn't fumble in bounds or out of the end zone. The media seems to forget about Bush's touchdowns. It was Leinart, and they all want him to marry their daughters. I think that he will, unfortunately, become the second 2-time Heisman winner.

As far as Leinart, I think the future first round pick of the Jets is a crapshoot like any other first round QB in the NFL. I agree with most of the above posters that it is unlikely he gets another Heisman.

I think Hawk and Carpenter will both be good pros. Hawk will make some pro team very happy in the top ten in next year's draft. He won't be around in the middle rounds like Wilhelm was.
