LeVeon Bell (RB Pittsburgh Steelers)

Another fantastic game by Bell, and a huge clearout on the fake FG, eliminating the coverage on that side singlehandedly.

Michigan State's Le'Veon Bell defies high school ranking
BY MATT DORSEY
FREE PRESS SPECIAL WRITER

So just where did Michigan State freshman running back Le'Veon Bell come from? The Reynoldsburg (Ohio) Groveport Madison product was rated a two-star prospect by Rivals.com and he was unranked at his position nationally. In fact, none of the national recruiting services had him ranked highly as a running back.

Compare that with South Carolina?s Marcus Lattimore, who was rated the No. 1 running back in the nation by Rivals.com and a five-star recruit. Through three games, both Lattimore and Bell are averaging over 100 yards rushing, but Bell?s yards per carry average is 8.5 while Lattimore?s is 4.8. Both teams have played only one BCS-level opponent.

Bell has to split carries at MSU, which will likely mean his yards per game will go down. Lattimore is the Gamecocks' feature back. However, the early numbers are proof that Bell is in elite company as a true freshman.

It has been a while since a running back with a ranking like Bell?s has made such a strong impact in the Big Ten. You probably have to go back to 2006 when P.J. Hill burst on the scene as a freshman at Wisconsin and rushed for over 1,500 yards. However, Hill had a redshirt year under his belt.

Bell?s play as a true freshman has to be one of the biggest surprises in college football so far. It also gives a lot of credence to the evaluation skills of Mark Dantonio and his coaching staff.

that kid is a bonafide stud.

I think Larry Caper just lost his job as the starting tailback. Bell looks like the best back on that team, and Baker has always been more talented than Caper. Wouldn't be surprised to see Caper transfer at some point in his career.
Bell has been great, MD found a good one in Bell.

The thing I love about Bell is the ability to be patient and throw the stiff arm every chance he gets. That can't be taught, that is pure instinct and ability.

FWIW, Caper isn't going anywhere, he will see his touches in the MSU backfield. This will be a 3 headed monster, each with different skill sets.

Groveport (Ohio) Madison coach Tim Brown always thought Le'Veon Bell had great potential to be a college running back.

"Not too often do you get a kid that size, that fast, that has that kind of vision," Brown said of Bell, who rushed for 1,333 yards and 21 touchdowns in his final year at Madison in 2009.

Bell, now a 6-foot-2, 237-pound sophomore, will be returning home today when Michigan State (3 -1) visits Ohio State (3-1) at 3:30 p.m. Groveport is about 10 miles southeast of Columbus.

Whenever Brown thought Bell wasn't giving all he could in the classroom or on the field, he would get after his player and refer to him by his nickname.

"We used to tease him," Brown said. "His nickname was Lazyeon.

"When you see someone with that great amount of talent, you expect them to work harder than everybody else. It was just immaturity. We teased around a little bit. When it came down to business, he was working hard and doing a good job."

Brown said he won't be attending the game at Ohio Stadium because of his own football priorities: "I'm in season, and we've got one of our hardest opponents next week, so I'll be preparing for that. Football coaches in season don't get to play around much."

He said he watches highlights, and someone from the coaching staff will keep tabs each week on how Bell performs.

Bell leads the Spartans with 217 yards rushing and six touchdowns. He rushed for 605 yards and eight touchdowns last season as a true freshman.

For a time, it looked like Bell would land at Bowling Green, one of the few schools that offered him a scholarship. Brown called MSU and told the Spartans they'd be missing out on a good player if they didn't recruit him.

Former MSU safety Eric Smith (2002-05) had played for Groveport Madison, and Brown said he knew coach Mark Dantonio was "an Ohio guy." Some schools, including Ohio State, were looking at Bell as a safety. Brown said OSU never offered Bell a scholarship.

Even though Brown said he used to yell at Bell to take things more seriously and stop being lazy, he never could stay mad at him for long: "It doesn't matter what was happening, screaming or yelling, before it was over he was smiling and he usually had you smiling again, too."

That PI call was awful. One of the worst I've seen. However, one blown call does not equate to 4 losses. It just sounds like sour grapes from a guy who choose to use the disrespect card (more sour grapes). If he were playing for ttun it would probably be more fun to rip him but he's still lil bro.
