Lists of Top Prospects for 2005 (mega-merge)

I watched a very good, tall, athletic QB from Palm Beach Lakes HS (my wife teaches there) by the name of Jarrett worth keeping track of next year. He's about 6'4", fast, and skinny, also throws a nice fade. To me, the most important route is the comeback and the out to the wide-side and I don't really have a feel about how he throws those routes.... yet. But. Excellent athlete.

some other S. Fla players listed FloridaKids top 200 list

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-prepfoot24feb24,0,2406460.story?coll=sfla-sports-headlines

Pahokee running back Antone Smith heads the local contingent on the state's Top 200 Class of 2005 high school football players as rated by recruiting analyst Larry Blustein of floridakids.us.

Smith, who led the Blue Devils to the Class 2B state title in 2003, is ranked fourth on the list, behind top-ranked Kenneth Phillips, a safety at Miami Carol City; Fred Rouse, a receiver at Tallahassee Lincoln; and Paul O'Hara, a running back from Cross City Dixie County.

The top-ranked Broward County player is Plantation defensive lineman Jeffrey Owens, who is 15th. Broward County placed 29 players on the list from a spread of 19 schools. Interestingly, perennial contender St. Thomas Aquinas does not have a player on the list. Ely is the most represented Broward school, with four players on the list -- tight end Michael Holton (36), lineman Ronnie Wilson (66), defensive back Walter McFadden (80) and quarterback Carlton Jackson (169).

American Heritage-Delray boasts the most Palm Beach County players (of the county's 14) with three -- lineman Jimmie Sutton (138), lineman Areon Nozinor (162) and wide receiver/defensive back Evan Cooper (171).

Rouse is not an FSU lock at all. We actually tried to have him up for an unoffical last year, (Mom got really sick, couldn't come) and he will be up for a couple of games this year. If he stays in Florida, I would be suprised to see him go to FSU as he told me that he wanted to go away to try new things in life. Bauss has done a good job on him.

We spend a lot of time with Owens as he is in our backyard. Conley is not sold on him yet, so he will be at Camp.

Wells, we will see. There are a lot of reasons he should be a Buckeye... Family in the area, likes Conley a lot, etc. But once Pete's private Air Force starts and it all heats up, kids change a lot. But we are in Bi-weekly contact with him.

Thanks for the update, HH. Great news on Rouse and nice to hear the visiting "experts" on BN are wrong about him.

Even Wells' Mom wants Maurice to pick Ohio State. It would be nice to see that happen. Mother knows best :wink2:

Thank you.

That is indeed the guy I was referring to. I brought a camera to video him last year. I got him throwing a TD vs Leonard, but it was my first and last game with my camera that is cool for just jackin' around but no good for football. This fall I'm going to get something that can actually zoom in and see if I can get into it.

Thanks again. And yes the kid stands in the pocket and the coaches there don't mind throwing the ball a bit. I bet he plays basketball, too, since Palm Beach Lakes is generally regarded as a basketball school.

i shoot lots of high school film and optical zoom is of utmost importance (as well as the lighting situation in the stadium but that you can't control).

i use a 20x optical zoom with my sony camcorder and i can get pretty close to the action regardless of the crapiness of the seats. occasionally i will use the 2x lens attachment for a total of 40x optical zoom but it usually isn't necessary.

send me any questions you may have about getting film or getting your film on the net for no out of pocket expense.

DB Chris Chancellor Miami Edison 5-11 170 - same school as Jacky Claude
QB Gene Delledonne Wilmington (Del.) Salesianum 6-5 200 -PSU fav but he might be scared off my Morelli- or PSU may skip a QB this year- his dad has been on Insiders saying that he will visit tOSU but not for the Nike camp- he will go to PSU Nike

DB Justin King Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway 6-0 180 - scUM/PSU currently top two- tOSU has offered

Tallahassee Leon- future tOSU pipeline??

check this out from today's Orlando Sentinel

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/spor...204,1,6724005.story?coll=orl-sports-headlines

Reuinion of sorts

If you coach long enough, you become part of the story that is high school sports.

Wade Rollinson, who has coached football at West Orange, DeLand, Atlantic and most recently helping Mainland win a Class 5A state championship, was named head coach at Tallahassee Leon, one of Florida's most storied programs.

In Our Town last weekend for the Nike Coach of the Year football clinic was Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel.

It seems Tressel and Rollinson were college fraternity brothers at Baldwin-Wallace. Do you think it will give Tressel a recruiting "insider advantage" at Leon?

Prospects in Insiders top 200 from Leon

75. Quentez Ruffin, DL, 6-5, 270, Tallahassee Leon.
97. Gavin Grigg, DL/FB, 6-1, 225, Tallahassee Leon.

a new WV name interested in tOSU- Ricky Phillips

phillips.jpg

http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=145&p=8&c=1&nid=1245958

Ht: 6-1 Wt: 190 40: 4.6
Position: QB, CB
High School: Spring Valley HS
(Huntington, WV)

Biography:
An All-State pick as a junior, Phillips accounted for over 2,000 yards of total offense -- 1,208 rushing and 1,050 passing. He finished the season with 17 touchdowns. He doubles as a defensive back.

His favorites are West Virginia, Tennessee, Marshall, tOSU, and PSU

Ricky Phillips

SPRING VALLEY -- The Spring Valley football team has a lot resting on quarterback Ricky Phillips’ shoulders.

Except it’s his arm, legs and mostly his IQ that they depend on.

At the beginning of the 2003 season fifth-year head coach Phil Ratliff made some drastic changes to the conventionally conservative Timberwolf offense. Instead of a rushing-dominated attack, Ratliff decided to put all his chips on the line and bet heavy on his most versatile and athletic player. The Timberwolves decided to spread out their offense -- and more importantly opposing defenses -- and gave their quarterback the option to run or pass at the line of scrimmage.

"We’ve been known as a run-the-ball power team, but this year we are throwing the ball, running the ball and kind of mix it up a lot on teams and it makes it hard on defenses," Phillips said. "Spreading it out allows us to run and throw."

The results have made Phillips one of the top offensive threats in the state. He is in the top 10 in rushing and passing in the Mountain State Athletic Conference. Two weeks ago, he became only the second player in conference history to rush and pass for 100 yards each in two different games. He passed for 118 and ran for 191 yards against Ripley (3-5), and rushed for 101 yards and passed for 124 against Hurricane Sept. 19.

But Phillips has also been able to spread the ball to all of Spring Valley’s offensive threats, something only the Timberwolf running backs got a chance to do in the past. Wide receiver Todd Maynard is 10th in the conference in receiving.

"Ricky has always been a really good athlete. It’s something that has been new to him," Ratliff said. "He’s not one-dimensional. He can run it or throw it.

"What makes him special a player is when you put him back in the shotgun and they bring the heat he is able to make somebody miss a lot of times. And his scrambling ability; any defensive coach will tell you how difficult it is with a quarterback that can run it or throw it. If you bring heat you take the chance of him busting out of the pocket."

Phillips and the No. 16 T’Wolves (4-3) had to do a lot of scrambling the last two weeks. They went into the Ripley game with a 2-3 record and slim playoff chances. Phillips was coming off a one-game suspension against Riverside for violating team rules.

But the T’Wolves bounced back to win after Ripley failed on a two-point conversion on its first overtime possession. Last week, Spring Valley kept South Charleston (0-7) winless thanks to another 100-yard rushing game by Phillips plus 70 from teammate Curt Davis and 99 from Randy Thompson.

"It really hurt me a lot to have to miss that game (a 32-12 loss to Riverside)," Phillips said. "I came back and I still feel like I owe this team something for missing that game. I feel like I still have something to prove every game and every practice. It would be very painful if we missed the playoffs by that one game."

"I know he felt really bad that he let the team down," Ratliff said. "Sometimes you learn from your mistakes, and hopefully the last two weeks he has. We are definitely a better football team with him in."

All four of the T’Wolves wins came with Phillips running, passing and playing defensive back. But their four wins have come against teams with a combined record of 7-24. The three losses were against some of the best teams in West Virginia’s Class AAA: No. 4 Riverside, No. 8 Huntington and No. 12 Nitro (combined record of 17-6).

The T’Wolves host No. 6 Cabell Midland (6-2) tonight at 7:30. It will be the best defense Phillips has faced all season. The Knights only allowed 26 first-half yards last week against Huntington, who also runs a spread offense.

But the Spring Valley coaching staff’s faith in Phillips hasn’t wavered.

"The best thing about Ricky, and the most overlooked thing, is that he is a smart kid," said Spring Valley offensive coordinator Brent Terry. "We go to the line with two plays, and he has the responsibility of checking to one of those plays."

"He’s an outstanding football player, and we have to play assignment football or else he will beat us," said Cabell Midland coach Chip McMillian. "He adds something that the Spring Valley offense hasn’t had in the past. He is multi-dimensional and hard to defend."

The Spring Valley coaches went one step further with their trust in Phillips a month ago when they made their new offense a no-huddle offense. Phillips said it has allowed him to make even more decisions and catch some defenses off guard.

"The guys around me are great. Everybody has a job to do, and they all do their jobs," he said. "Changing the plays and stuff and kind of being the orchestrater at the line has helped a lot. When I approach the line I immediately look at the formation the defense is in. There are usually key players in the formations that I need to check, and if that player is out of position, then I check to the play that will work best for the offense."

It’s a lot of pressure on one player, but Ratliff wouldn’t choose any other player to ride his team’s fate on.

"You can’t put too much pressure on Ricky," Ratliff said. He’d like to do it all if he could."

There it is. The defensive side of the list will be sent out to you early
next week along with an overall picture how things are shaping up from Tom.

TEAMS ON THE MOVE:
With the debut of the top 100 this week, Tom also takes a second to talk
about what teams are really moving. Here is his breakdown of who has been
the most impressive so far and who has been the most surprising.

EAST:

Boston College-The Eagles are off to great recruiting start and are in the
hunt for some major prospects out east.

Pitt- Walt Harris and his staff have done a fantastic job so far. There was
an expected fall off in Pittsburgh from the ACC shakeup, but the Panthers
appear to have weathered the storm very nicely

MIDWEST:

Michigan- It is going to be another big year in Ann Arbor. The unquestioned
leaders in the Midwest so far. :scum4: and so does Lemming :tongue2:

SOUTH

Florida, Florida State, Miami- It seems like every kid Tom talks to from the
south has these three schools amongst his favorites.

Mississippi State- The big surprise this year in the south. They appear to
be receiving some heavy interests from some very good players. Obviously
Sylvester Croom has put together a staff that can flat out recruit.

BIG 12 COUNTRY:

Texas: It always the Longhorns in the Big 12. An annual recruiting
powerhouse.

Nebraska: The biggest surprise in recruiting so far this year. Currently in
the hunt for some major players. Coach Callahan and his staff are off to a
great start and the way things are going, may be able to pull in a top tier
class.

WEST:

USC- Way ahead of anyone else.

Arizona and Arizona State- The state of Arizona is home to the two biggest
surprises in the west so far. Both schools are getting out everywhere.
