Live NFL 2006 Draft Coverage (official thread)

If Leinart is going to succeed (and I don't think he will), then Arizona is the best chance he has, now that Edge is there.

The Jets had a fantastic first day...they now have some instant credibility, especially on offense.

I don't know about instant credibility. They did a great job of patching their line, and added a fine QB prospect, but if Martin finally shows his age, they are screwed. Getting 2 10 year starters on the OL is certainly a good job.

All I meant was that you can have skill guys (like Detroit), but if your O-line is crap you'll still lose. With the Jets, even if the skill guys are not as good, the O-line help will instantly upgrade their offense, and keep them in games in the 4th quarter.

Urlacher is a good "big athletic play" linebacker, but he is a tad overrated...though still a fine LB. I'd say Hawk will definitely be in his class, if not a little more complete of a player in a few years.

I just lost a bet I made last summer, where I bet a guy that Bobby Carpenter would be drafted ahead of Hawk. Carpenter might be Rookie of the Year in Dallas, operating w/ DeMarcus Ware on the other side....

Carpenter is a "Parcells guy" in every conceivable way (including genetics, which is a first) so I think he couldn't be in a better situation. If he gets everything out of Parcells, I wouldn't be surprised if Carpenter is the best LB in the NFL at one point in his career.

For all the Bears fans out there...

Is anyone surprised that they didnt pick up any offensive players? I would have thought that since they allowed 12.8 ppg, they would have been less focused on defense and more focused on something like a TE or another receiver. I wish they wouldnt have taken Benson last year and instead have gotten LenDale White in the second round of this year.

Huge Bears fan here, and quite frankly, I am at a loss for words, except when describing Angelo, in which case they all have 4 letters.

A DB is a good choice, but if they were going to do that, they should have stayed in round 1 and gotten one. Taking the 15th best CB or whatever it was, from a school that many people have never heard of from DII, is just dumb. But then I thought "Well, maybe he can return kicks and punts, and with any luck, a good TE will still be on the board late in round 2". Then they took..........a guy who can't play either DB or WR at an NFL level, so they blew a 2nd on a guy to return kicks and punts, making their earlier pick next to useless and passing on the mammoth TE from Georgia who was sitting right there. Makes no sense, but neither does Angelo. He is on record as saying he LOVES the prosepct of "finding starters on the 2nd day this year", which means basically he has no idea what he is talking about, because all if the good TEs are gone, and there weren't many good WRs to begin with.

Last year's Bears team was good enough to beat last year's division, but with the improvements the Vikings and Packers have made, last year's team isn't going to cut it. I saw nothing on the first day that would indicate the Bears will be any better of a football team.

As I took a look around the different draft reviews to this point, there was a recurring theme: Character counts. I'd like to think that with the amount of Buckeyes selected this early, that the NFL thinks pretty highly of not only our guys' talent, but how they approach football and life. And, I think that Mr. Tressel is feeling pretty good about his ability to judge people, not just players. Might be something to remember as this recruiting season evolves.

Quite right-now let's hope the recruits parents think the same way!

Best drafts the 1st day-Jets,Cardinals,Steelers,Lions,Ravens
Worst drafts the 1st day-Bengals,Bears,Colts,Dallas-after Carpenter in the 1st...
