Maryland puts trainers, strength coach on leave

Maryland has placed two athletic trainers and a strength coach on administrative leave as the school continues its review of the circumstances surrounding the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair, sources told ESPN.

Athletic director Damon Evans informed the team on Saturday that head football athletic trainer Wes Robinson, director of athletic training Steve Nordwall, and Rick Court, Maryland's assistant athletics director for sports performance, were placed on administrative leave, according to people at the meeting.

Maryland places D.J. Durkin on administrative leave, Matt Canada to serve as interim coach

Maryland has added head coach D.J. Durkin to the list of coaches who are now on administrative leave.

“I am extremely concerned by the allegations of unacceptable behaviors by members of our football staff detailed in recent media reports. We are committed to fully investigating the program,” athletic director Damon Evans said in a letter on Saturday. “At this time, the best decision for our football program is to place Maryland Head Football Coach DJ Durkin on leave so we can properly review the culture of the program.

“This is effective immediately. Matt Canada will serve as interim head coach.”

Thought I'd share what info I have. I want to preface this by saying I would change my name if I knew how. If anyone can help me with that, ifI be obliged.

First, there is a lot of mixed reports coming in. Roman braglio, an edsall platter and Durkin Captain, responded to some of the allegations here: http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/...ootball-braglio-dj-durkin-0811-story,amp.html

Secondly, several players have refused to go back to camp until Durkin is reinstated including, from what I can tell, Byron cowart. People I know who are closer to the program than me are saying about 95% of the athletes are in his corner, in fact eight or nine parents want to meet with loh to support durkin.

Third, if this is true, every Maryland fan, all three of us, should call to burn the program to the ground and start again. We should also still watch and attend games to support the athletes that have had to deal with this for our team, state and school.

None of this clears Durkin or the staff from wrong doing, and the death of a 19 yo athlete is not only tragic, but quite possibly unforgivable. Md should never have been in this situation. I strongly recommend donating to Jordan McNair's foundation if possible, many would appreciate it. jordanmcnairfoundation.org

Ultimately I'm very concerned as a coach and teacher, but am willing to wait and see what the September 15th report reveals.

It is one of the better ones I have ever seen here.

Tragic situation going on here. Heatstroke is nothing to play with.
When I was in the service (Fort Benning, GA, July to November), the drills would always say, "Drink Waterrrrrr…"
To which we would reply, "BEAT THE HEAT DRILL SARGENT , BEAT THE HEAT, HOOOAH!"

His temp was a 106 when he got TO the hospital?!? Damn...

Attorney for Jordan McNair family wants D.J. Durkin fire

The family of late Maryland football player Jordan McNair has hired a law firm to investigate their son’s death, and on Sunday the lead attorney from that firm came out and said Maryland should fire Terps head coach D.J. Durkin.

McNair collapsed after a team-supervised workout on May 29 and died on June 13. The 19-year-old passed away due to a heatstroke, according to the family. On Friday evening, an ESPN report stated McNair’s body temperature was 106 degrees during said heatstroke.

Since that report, Maryland has since suspended a number of key off-the-field personneland placed Durkin on administrative leave, but Baltimore lawyer Billy Murphy believes Durkin must permanently be removed from his post.

“What I think ought to be done with this existing coach, he should be fired. He should be fired for what happened, his role in it, the culture he established,” Murphy told ESPN Sunday. “Putting aside the tragic nature of what happened to this family and what happened this young man, there is a football program that has to be absolutely straightened out before any reasonable parent would want to send their child (to Maryland).”

Murphy also said that the firm of Murphy, Falcon & Murphy is “leaning” toward filing a civil lawsuit in federal court, but will wait until the university wraps up its investigation before choosing a course of action.
