Tigers checking their emotions - Massillon, OH - The Independent

MASSILLON, OH - Football can be an emotional game. And few football games at the high school level can be as emotional as the annual grudge match between Massillon and McKinley.

On Saturday afternoon at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, the two ancient rivals renew acquaintances once more. When they do so, there is no doubt they will do so practically brimming with emotion.

But, there can be a downside to all that emotion. Let that emotion take over and not keep it controlled, and it can lead to dumb penalties, the kind of dumb penalties which can ultimately lose a football game.

"It's kind of hard, knowing that it's the Massillon-McKinley game," Tiger tailback/cornerback J.T. Turner said. "There's going to be some talking on both sides of it. We just can't let it get into our heads and just go out there and play our game."

WHAT TO WATCH Head coaches Ron Johnson of McKinley and Jason Hall of Massillon each get their first taste of one the nation's top high school rivalries. Both QBs - Kyle Ohradzansky of McKinley and Robert Partridge of Massillon - are getting their first start in the rivalry. Ohradzansky has thrown for 946 yards and nine TDs. CANTON Soon after Ron Johnson agreed to become McKinley High School's football coach, he sat down with a calendar and started counting.

Back on Feb. 25, there were 243 days before Johnson had the distinct honor and pressure of leading McKinley on the field against Massillon. Johnson knows because that is what he was counting between then and Saturday.

Every McKinley player received the same calendar with the number of days until they played Massillon. The countdown ends with a 2 p.m. kickoff Saturday at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in the 117th meeting between the two programs.
