hard to argue with this.

Instant Analysis - Michigan vs. Notre Dame

By Matthew Zemek | Michigan | Notre Dame

There are dozens of other games going on as this story is filed at 7:28 Eastern time on a crazy Saturday, but Notre Dame's win over Michigan might be the craziest in the bunch.

Five words, people: Lloyd Carr in South Bend.

There's a reason the Maize and Blue always comes to Indiana in September and loses: Carr, the usually solid and accomplished coach--heck, a national championship coach who knows how to ride a showhorse in November and give it a finishing kick--who somehow just doesn't find his stride in September. The last time Michigan won in South Bend? 1994. The last year in which Carr was not Michigan's head coach? 1994 (that was Gary Moeller's last year in Ann Arbor).

The drill happens every even-numbered year: Michigan has more talent. Michigan doesn't use talent. Notre Dame plays to win, Michigan plays not to lose. Notre Dame does indeed win, Michigan loses. We saw that again on Saturday in South Bend.

Whether it was dumping the ball into the middle of the line on 3rd and goal from the 6, or running a QB sneak from his OWN 1 after getting a huge goal-line stand from his defense, or basically keeping Chad Henne under wraps instead of treating him like a starting quarterback playing big-time D-I football in Notre Dame Stadium, Carr and his sidekick Terry Malone settled for field goals and all but assumed that they could win the game 9-0. They didn't allow for the possibility that Notre Dame could hang around or make a few big plays. They didn't act like the team with more ammunition in reserve--Michigan never does in South Bend under Carr.

Ty Willingham coached this game to win it, throwing halfback options and tackle eligibles at the Wolverines and giving his players a full playbook to use. His troops fed off the aggressiveness shown by their coach, and flew across the field in the second half while showing a totally new personality on offense. Lloyd Carr, on the other hand, did not coach as though he believed in his players, trusting them to make plays at any point in time. Relying on field goals and refusing to verticalize his passing game (despite a stableful of lanky and athletic playmaking receivers), Carr--blessed with a talented team playing on a big stage in a classic rivalry--acted as though his opponent was not as significant as Notre Dame.

And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, might be the very reason why Carr always loses in South Bend, usually with the more loaded ballclub: he forgets (or maybe, refuses to even initially acknowledge) that Notre Dame carries with it a special aura, even in down years, even in the midst of controversy. Like the New York Yankees, Notre Dame is such a storied sporting institution in America that merely wearing the Irish uniform, especially on big occasions such as the Michigan game, automatically increases the chances of an inspired effort in any adverse circumstance. On any game day, wearing the gold helmet can create a culture of belief that, if given but one spark, can take off and assume a life of its own.

THAT is what happens when Lloyd Carr goes conservative in South Bend. Notre Dame hangs around because Carr allows that to happen with his play selection and strategic decisions in the first half. Then the Irish hit one or two big plays, gain momentum, see the momentum snowball, and cap it off with a special teams play. This was the formula the Irish used in 2002 under Willingham, and with this win, it's possible they could use it again. What dawns upon the observer in the wake of this game is that this culture of belief--a culture that only comes from being a Golden Domer, unlike anyone or anything else in college football--can singlehandedly propel the Irish forward, and that it--not anything associated with raw talent--is what led the Irish to those 10 wins two seasons ago.

They can thank Lloyd Carr for providing their jump start every even-numbered year. We'll see if Ty's troops maximize this Michigan win the same way they did in 2002.

No kidding...This is why I don't subscribe to all these "Ban Tibor" threads. He's gotta be one of the most entertaining posters around. It's even funnier watching him harass scUMmers. I swear they are all a bunch of bi-polar babies...it's like freakin Bucknuts on crack!

I just love how bitter they are about our success.

I also have to wonder how many fans over there actually went to Michigan. Hey, from an academic standpoint, that's an outstanding institution. So you have to figure that people who actually attended and/or graduated would be able to appreciate the difference between success and luck.

Are we lucky sometimes? Sure. All teams are. Likewise, all teams suffer disfortune from time to time. But you don't win as many close ones as OSU by random chance and luck.

Poor little Weasels. Beat by a team that lost to BYU, and can't handle Iowa anymore. They don't want their own coach, and have to suffer the knowledge that ours is one of the premiere coaches in I-A, and is still young to boot.
As someone who has been around on campus at UM since 2000, and was surrounded by UM fans my entire life leading up to that, I think I can add something here...

As someone who attended and graduated from UM, I can say that I, for one, recognize that it's skill, talent and coaching that keeps OSU winning. "Luck" is not really a factor.

As for Tressel, I don't think UM fans have any trouble with Tressel at all. I don't think UM fans look at OSU at all until game week. They look at the game scores, maybe watch the highlights. But as good as OSU fans think Tressel is (and with good reason), with the posters available, all that crap...UM fans don't know squat about him. UM fans concentrate on their team and how great they think their players are.

OSU defines themselves by their rivalry with UM. UM fans define themselves by the quality of the bowl game they go to, and how well they do in the polls.

I guess that's why I wore my OSU hat on campus for the entire week and nobody said a friggin word about it. One kid gave me a weird look, but nobody even asked about it. They don't care.

Finally, I would just like to point out that you don't win by running draw plays on 3rd and 19, especially not when that is the EXACT SAME PLAY that you run EVERY time you are 3rd and long. Carr does some things great, but playcalling is not one of them.

UM wins on talent. No heart, no coaching, no dedication. If their talent isn't enough to win on its own, they lose.

Did they really accuse SOMEONE ELSE of being an arrogant ass?

Where is this board? I need to pay these shitheads a visit.

C-Dog: "Are we lucky sometimes? Sure. All teams are. Likewise, all teams suffer disfortune from time to time. But you don't win as many close ones as OSU by random chance and luck."

Not luck, my man: TRESSELLBALL. Whether its the University of Miami Hurricanes, the San Diego State Aztecs, scUM, or Marshall, he plays the game close, and teaches the kids how to play close CFB games. His teams are more comfortable playing in a 24-21 game than a 45-7 game, as most big programs are accustomed to.

"I also bet you can't say the same for any other site in that network banning its own."

Well, I got banned from Grassy, and I am a UM Alumnus. That's more than I can say for most of the people on that toxic waste dump of a board.

Tibbs: "Like a rat to the feeder bar" --Milly about Tibor"

If there is a more accurate description, I'd like to see it. However, if tibor is the instigator on the scUM board, what does that make Mr. Crumb? The lovable, be-all, friendly scUM fan?

Buckeye fans...what's the deal... <HR>Almost every thread I read there's some stupid comment from a buckeye fan...

Do you simple bastards not have anything better to do?

What type of IQ level does it take to make little jackass comments on every thread you see?

I guess I'll never understand the mentality of hanging on another team's message board just to get a dig in here and there....you guys must have been the kid who was beaten up everyday in school for your lunch money...<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :rolleyes -->

You might want to start focusing on NC St. right about now....I have a feeling that you're going to have your hands full next week...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I don't have to focus on NC State. Regardless of how many times I've tried to use it as a pickup line, I DO NOT PLAY FOR OHIO STATE! The only thing I have to focus on on Saturdays is whether or not the brats are tasty and the beer is cold! As long as Holmes and The Nuge aren't hanging out a GBW, I'm not worried!
