Merging rules and some suggestions

Over the years of watching BP grow, and remembering the not-so-long-ago days when one could log in here and see maybe one new thread a week, I love seeing where this site is now. Moderation on here is as proactive as any that you'll see on any web forum, sports-related or not, and this site excels as a result of the hard work moderators here do.

One aspect of that is thread merging, which is of course a double-edged sword. The lack of duplicate, triplicate and quadruplicate(?) or more threads on one single topic is a relief, and makes this site much easier to read.

There's a point, though, when you have a 300+ page thread that thoughts and ideas get buried, causing repeated posts on the same topic. The NC game thread is one such topic, and I had a thought which is probably too late for this season, but might be useful in the future, which is to make a separate subforum for a championship game, bowl game or major OOC contest. That would allow threads like "How do our WRs stack up against USCs DBs?" without losing the conversation in a 300 page thread, and without causing that topic to come up a dozen times in the general football forum.

Once the event is over, the subforum could be merged back into the general football forum for archival purposes, since the topics are no longer hot. They could also just be archived entirely, like the old "ESPiN hate me" subforum.

A second issue that comes up a lot is in the recruiting forums. Are those threads just for news on recruits or for discussion? We all seem to have different opinions. On the one hand, it is frustrating to check a thread looking for news only to read, "Does anyone know if Josh Jenkins likes Buckeye Blitz ice cream?" On the other, this IS a discussion board, and people do like to discuss things, even banalities.

So, my proposal is -- for those hotly discussed "Thread Avis" recruits, forming two threads: a locked, mods-only real recruiting news thread and a recruit discussion thread.

Both ideas may sound like more work, but ultimately I think that they will lead to less work for the mods and less confusion as to what is and isn't appropriate to post and where to post.

I will admit that as a long time poster and reader on here, there are times that I get confused as to where something goes or even as to where a discussion has vanished off to. I think that making the board both easier to navigate and easier to administrate is the ultimate goal, and I hope that these suggestions are useful in that regard.

Merging is one of those calls where I can't really define it but I know it when I see it. We already have way too many subforums on here...and I honestly believe we let many of the side discussion threads go until they ran their course and were merged into the game threads later.

As a whole, I think the Mods do a great job with it.

As for the recruiting threads, we discussed that. However, I think most of the issues rise up from what is expected. Discussion is fine...talk about the prospect's strengths/weaknesses, game performances, latest articles etc. The issues come about with what you mentioned..."is there anything new?" or baseless speculation that was answered in any number of the pages is what drives us nuts. Folks say they don't feel like reading 18 pages to find an answer...well, sorry but those 18 pages are what have made the prospect a priority recruit.

It has likely happened before, but I am having a hard time thinking of a good legitimate question or observation that was met with disdain in the recruiting forum.

If anything, I think we are growing so fast that the new posters dont have time to acclimate to how we do things here. They are used to Scout, ESPN, etc etc. They jump in with 2 feet and next thing you know, we have all hell breaking loose. It used to be a few new users, some hazing, some adjustments, and then posters for life or another round of "elitist asshole" tearful goodbyes.

We can always get better and we are always looking to do so...thanks for the observations.

I like the nazi-modding that occurs here.

That gives me the urge to merge if ya know what I mean. Yeah, you do...
