Over the years of watching BP grow, and remembering the not-so-long-ago days when one could log in here and see maybe one new thread a week, I love seeing where this site is now. Moderation on here is as proactive as any that you'll see on any web forum, sports-related or not, and this site excels as a result of the hard work moderators here do.
One aspect of that is thread merging, which is of course a double-edged sword. The lack of duplicate, triplicate and quadruplicate(?) or more threads on one single topic is a relief, and makes this site much easier to read.
There's a point, though, when you have a 300+ page thread that thoughts and ideas get buried, causing repeated posts on the same topic. The NC game thread is one such topic, and I had a thought which is probably too late for this season, but might be useful in the future, which is to make a separate subforum for a championship game, bowl game or major OOC contest. That would allow threads like "How do our WRs stack up against USCs DBs?" without losing the conversation in a 300 page thread, and without causing that topic to come up a dozen times in the general football forum.
Once the event is over, the subforum could be merged back into the general football forum for archival purposes, since the topics are no longer hot. They could also just be archived entirely, like the old "ESPiN hate me" subforum.
A second issue that comes up a lot is in the recruiting forums. Are those threads just for news on recruits or for discussion? We all seem to have different opinions. On the one hand, it is frustrating to check a thread looking for news only to read, "Does anyone know if Josh Jenkins likes Buckeye Blitz ice cream?" On the other, this IS a discussion board, and people do like to discuss things, even banalities.
So, my proposal is -- for those hotly discussed "Thread Avis" recruits, forming two threads: a locked, mods-only real recruiting news thread and a recruit discussion thread.
Both ideas may sound like more work, but ultimately I think that they will lead to less work for the mods and less confusion as to what is and isn't appropriate to post and where to post.
I will admit that as a long time poster and reader on here, there are times that I get confused as to where something goes or even as to where a discussion has vanished off to. I think that making the board both easier to navigate and easier to administrate is the ultimate goal, and I hope that these suggestions are useful in that regard.
