Randy Shannon talks about scrimmage No. 2

Hello again everyone! It's Susan Miller Degnan here. I got a chance to hear Randy Shannon on WQAM with host Joe Rose early this morning. It was a great interview.
FYI: The team is off today, so there's no access.
In case any of you didn't get a chance to hear it, here are some tidbits about the scrimmage (closed to fans and media) from that interview that stood out, per Shannon's perspective (in no particular order):
* The guys he listed as missing (there might have been more; don't know) the scrimmage were offensive tackle Joel Figueroa, WR LaRon Byrd, DT Curtis Porter, LB Tyrone Cornelius, CB Brandon McGee, LB Kelvin Cain, CB Ryan Hill. "All of them have nicks. But everybody thinks, 'Well, they put them in a boot and they're done.' You know and I know when you put guys in boots you're just trying to heal them quicker.''
*LaRon Byrd was walking around last night with a brace and Shannon said the injured guys walked around the Traz Powell Stadium track for a couple miles. Traz Powell was the scrimmage site. He said the next scrimmage will be late in the day instead of night.
* The safety position and second-team linebackers are the areas he's still looking at extra closely, trying to solidify the exact lineup
* Olivier Vernon is "so athletic" and "so explosive" that he could play a lot of positions, including linebacker and his current defensive end. Shannon said he sometimes takes chances that likely get coaches nervous, but often work out because he's such a good athlete.
* Fr WR Allen Hurns, who hurt his right hamstring around Scrimmage No. 1 (that info is from me, not Shannon), is a guy Shannon would like to get back into the mix sometime soon.
* WR Tommy Streeter needs to improve his consistency. One play will be a great one; the next not-so-great.
* His young running backs are fast!! But we knew that already.
* DE Andrew Smith, who, according to UM sports information office, had 10 tackles, three sacks and two qb hurries, "is in unbelievable shape." He said, "This guy is making plays for us.''
* Offensive line is still a battle. He didn't say why RT Fig sat out last night (Jermaine Johnson played tackle). He didn't say the line looked bad, he just said it's important to have a lot of backups who can play.
* He said Jacory is doing well on the field and being more talkative and assertive.
* Bosher still seems to be the guy who will do the kickoffs, at least for now.
* Kickoff coverage and punt coverage teams -- Shannon said UM has about 15 guys he feels confident about who are "fast guys, physical guys" and can "make plays in open space.'' He said they're better than last year, and about eight of those guys who weren't part of those 15 last season because of injuries or they weren't around.

Sun Sentinel Scrimmage Report

? There were several missed tackles on RB Storm Johnson?s 92-yard touchdown run.
Let's pass the hat:

? Shannon thinks DB Latwan Anderson, a track signee and football walk-on, will arrive on campus next week. Anderson hasn?t yet flown down from his home in Ohio because he can?t find a plane ticket his family can afford.
?The hard thing for him right now is you can?t make up a ticket up in one day.? Anderson likely will fly into Fort Lauderdale and take a shuttle down to Miami.

Com'n, he's a legit track guy. The track team doesn't have that kind of money. Besides, track season doesn't start for a while, so there's no rush. Track. Track track track.

Oh wait, he's going to play football? WHAT A COINCIDENCE!

Miami: still dirty, still grossly incompetent at hiding it.

How do I measure this great Miami D line depth? Is it the great athleticism of the D line that failed to shine through in game conditions last season, or is it the ineptitude of the Miami O line during this season's fall camp?

Smith hopes he can shine

Junior defensive end Andrew Smith says he was both surprised and disappointed that he didn?t have a single sack last season. He started seven games and played in 11, but couldn?t bring a QB down. ?It motivated me a lot,? Smith said.
In Wednesday?s scrimmage, the second one of training camp, Smith was credited with three sacks and 10 tackles. On the third possession, he recorded three consecutive tackles.
?I just kept working hard,? Smith said. ?[The coaches] told me I did a good job. I knew I did well. I?m just looking forward to keep making plays.?
Smith said he concentrated this summer on getting quicker and being more explosive off the snap. So far, so good.
?Excited about the way he?s getting going,? Coach Randy Shannon said. ?He still makes mistakes, but he?s improving every time. He?s really doing an unbelievable job in pass rush.?
Shannon added: ?He?s done a lot of good things in the offseason, especially in the summer time, working out with [strength and conditioning] Coach [Andreu] Swasey, really getting into the weight room. It has improved his conditioning.?
Shannon said that as a whole, the defensive ends had better technique in Wednesday?s scrimmage than the previous scrimmage. As for Smith, it remains to be seen if he can get into the rotation with Allen Bailey and Adewale Ojomo as the starters.
?We?re just working hard as a unit so we can dominate games,? Smith said. ?We?re so deep. No matter who?s out there, we?ll work hard and get the job done.?

Bosher candidate for Lou Groza Award

Another preseason award watch list is out on kicker/punter Matt Bosher is on it. The senior has been named to the Lou Groza Award Watch List, given annually to the nation?s top kicker. It?s awarded by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. Bosher was a semifinalist for the Groza Award as a sophomore.
The preseason watch list is based largely on stats from last season.
Bosher was all-ACC first-team as a kicker and second-team all-ACC as a punter last season. He made 14-of-16 field goals and comes into this season having made 12 consecutive FGs ? the second best streak in ?Canes history.
Bosher, who has made 88.9 percent of field goals in his career, also has made 90 consecutive extra points ? the third longest streak in school history.

A few tweets from the Sun Sentinel:

  1. #Hurricanes RB Graig Cooper and LB Jordan Futch, who've done only non-contact drills in camp, will sit out final scrimmage Monday. http://twitter.com/sgorten/status/21831379510

  2. #Hurricanes S JoJo Nicolas also didn't practice Sunday and is expected to sit out
  3. #Hurricanes RT Joel Figueroa didn't practice again. Likely will miss second straight scrimmage with apparent upper body injury.

  4. #Hurricanes RB Graig Cooper and LB Jordan Futch, who've done only non-contact drills in camp, will sit out final scrimmage Tuesday
For our friend bazooka who told us Henderson looked good at camp, a repost from a few days ago:

The University of Miami, I hate you let me count the ways:
1: Thug ass players
2: Thug fans who know nothing about football or what a fan is.
3: Fans like my uncle who hate everyone who isn't white, unless they can play football.
4: I was stuck in South Florida last year, if absence makes the heart grow fonder, closeness makes the heart turn bitter.
5: Get the fuck over 2003
6: There's always a scapegoat. It's never the Canes fault.
7: This is an ibis
Ibis.gif
this is a fucking duck

8: Those stupid Donna Shanananah its all about the U commercials.
9: It's not all about the U, hell you couldn't even sell your alotment of tickets.
10: Ugly colors on lame ass unis
11: You are not warriors, soldiers, or otherwise. Don't talk shit, don't wear camo.
12: South Florida smells like ball sweat and swamp.
13: Michael Irvin... Enough said.
I may hate Michigan, but at least I can respect them when Rich Rod isn't their coach. I can't say the same about Thug U.
