Michigan chatter - 2005

Lllyod's still whining about this?

OSU NOTES
Carr still upset about delay at OSU last year

By Doug Harris

Dayton Daily News

Columbus — Michigan coach Lloyd Carr took another jab at Ohio State for the treatment his team received before their game last year.

The Wolverines were detained outside Ohio Stadium as bomb-sniffing dogs rummaged through backpacks and equipment bags. OSU officials explained that all visiting teams are subjected to security checks, but Carr thought the school went out of its way to disrupt his team's arrival.

"I don't think we would ever treat any other school like we were treated at Ohio State," he said Tuesday.

The Big Ten office implemented a rule that schools must notify opponents beforehand about upcoming searches. But "that's something you would expect as a general courtesy," Carr said.

He added that the incident went beyond the gamesmanship that has been known to occur during the longtime rivalry.

"I think there is a difference between gamesmanship and disrespect," he said.

OSU coach Jim Tressel denied the school intended to harass the Wolverines, but linebacker Anthony Schlegel expects some payback when the Buckeyes arrive at Michigan Stadium.

"I could see maybe busing to the stadium and them making us take a long way. And you get to the locker room a little late and you have to hurry to get dressed," he said. "Why not use those things to your advantage? I would."

The Big Ten office implemented a rule that schools must notify opponents beforehand about upcoming searches. But "that's something you would expect as a general courtesy," Carr said. - doesn't informaing them ahead of time kind of take away from the searches effectiveness?

Huge dilemma.....
My youngest son has a playoff game tonight for the leagues Super Bowl...
If they win, they face the other division champs Sat. 1130am..... cutting into gametime with trophy issues & end-of-season speeches: ... Should I tell his coach he will miss the 2nd. half or just pull him because the league shoulda known the timing in advance!
Even in Georgia!!!

CFB News Prediction for The Game

Big Ten Game of the Week
Ohio State (8-2) at Michigan (7-3) 1 pm ET ABC
Why to watch: It's win and wait. The winner of, arguably, college football's best rivalry will win the Big Ten's automatic BCS bid if Penn State loses to Michigan State later in the day. With each team realistically out of the at-large BCS process, the worst the winner can hope for will likely be the Capital One Bowl, but winning this game would be reward enough. The two have traded road wins for the last two seasons with Ohio State almost ruining Michigan's Big Ten BCS hopes last year in a 37-21 stomping. This has been a crazy season for the Wolverines with three early losses getting the Maize and Blue fans grumbling. With a four-game winning streak, including clutch wins over Penn State and Iowa, Lloyd Carr's club is in a position to win its third straight Big Ten title if it gets help from the Spartans. Ohio State lost to Texas and Penn State, no shame there, and is the hottest team outside of Austin and L.A. scoring more than 40 points in each of its last four games outscoring its last five opponents by an average of 42-15.
Why Ohio State might win: Absolutely everything is working for Ohio State right now. Yeah, it's easy to look good when you're playing Indiana and Illinois, but the defense completely shut down Northwestern's attack and outbombed Minnesota. The running game has gotten rolling with Antonio Pittman and Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr. is starting to make plays, and Smith is the Big Ten's most efficient passer. Michigan might be playing well, but does it have enough on both sides of the ball to play the complete game needed to pull this out? The Wolverines won't be able to run the ball unless Mike Hart is back and effective after missing time with a variety of problems from a bad hamstring to a bum ankle, so if Chad Henne can't handle the pressure from the Buckeye front seven, this might not be pretty.
Why Michigan might win: Smith ran wild on the Michigan defense last year, and most college football fans still think the Wolverines can't handle running quarterbacks. They've faced three quarterbacks who can move in Michigan State's Drew Stanton, Penn State's Michael Robinson and Northwestern's Brett Basanez, and they won all three games. To be fair, Stanton and Basanez haven't been running too much lately, while Robinson had an efficient passing game, but the back seven is handling the spread far better than last year. Minnesota proved the Buckeye secondary can be bombed on, and Henne should be able to do the same if he gets the time to throw. This is the best receiving corps the Buckeyes will face all year and it should be able to get deep and make several big plays.
Who to watch: In a game as even as this one should be, one or two big plays should turn the tide. After disappointing for most of the year, Michigan's Steve Breaston and Ohio State's Ted Ginn Jr. are starting to break out. Breaston has been a bust as a receiver with only 18 catches for 230 yards and two touchdowns, but he's averaging 26.9 yards per kickoff return and 12.9 yards per punt return. Ginn Jr. has been more of a playmaker as a receiver with 34 grabs for 547 yards and three touchdowns, and is averaging 12.2 yards per punt return and 29.6 yards on kickoff returns. It's not a reach to assume the playmaker who has the better game will lead his team to the win.
What will happen: Ohio State can't turn the ball over. As long as Michigan doesn't get any big breaks, and is limited to a few big plays, the Buckeye running game and pass rush should lead the way to a tough win.
CFN Prediction: Ohio State 24 .. Michigan 20 ...
Line: Ohio State -3 | Make your pick and compete against others
Must See Rating: (5 lock yourself in a room to watch - 1 Geraldo at Large) ... 5
Final Score:

Nice write up..Ive always like CFBnews.com..My prediction was a little off from theirs, but...

no, the point of a search is to prevent illegal things from getting in. if announcing the search scares people from taking illegal things in, then all is right with the world.

oh yeah, carr is a whining pussy. if he didn't want to be searched he should've showed up on time.

That's funny, I thought the teams had traded home wins for the last three seasons. :)
This is the best receiving corps the Buckeyes will face all year and it should be able to get deep and make several big plays.
In retrospect, Texas had the best receiving corp Ohio State will have faced all year.

You are assuming that announcing the search would deter people from bringing illegal items in. I would think it would only make them hide illegal items better, so they might not be found in a general search.

um, if they are good enough to get away with smuggling something in, then they are going to do it other way. I seriously doubt the search declaration will be their motivation for bringing a bomb or something illegal into the stadium.

Haha, and GBW was telling us visiting buckeyes that Carr had moved on. Fat chance.

Why is it that I have this feeling Carr, being the whining douche that he is, probably got belligerent with the security detail during the search last year, thus causing a routine two-minute search to take fifteen-minutes or longer?

Like you said, I don't what player would bring a bomb or gun into a stadium, and I don't know if that's what they were searching for in the first place.

I was just thinking that if they're told "Hey, we're going to search your duffle bags on the way in." If I had something I wanted to bring in, I wouldn't hide anything illegal in my duffle bag.

You're approaching this the wrong way. The suggestion isn't that the UM players, or the players or coaches of any other team, are trying to smuggle WMDs into the stadium, but rather that a terrorist would toss a few duffle bags full of TNT in the equipment bin under a teams' bus so that the team bus would drive the stuff right past security for the terrorist.
