Michigan State Spartans (official thread)

NO. 2 MICHIGAN STATE: SPARTY
Sparty yes!

For all the ups and downs Ohio State fans have had with Michigan's other program, you have to give credit where credit's due. Sparty is good.

Who wouldn't want an absolutely jacked spartan warrior representing your team? He's great with the fans. He's great with the cheerleaders. He's great with the band. What more could you want?

Ex-Michigan State coach convicted of lying about Larry Nassar abuse claims gets jail time

A former Michigan State University head gymnastics coach was sentenced Tuesday to 90 days in jail for lying to police during an investigation into former Olympic and university doctor Larry Nassar.

Kathie Klages, 65, was found guilty in February of a felony and a misdemeanor for denying she knew of Nassar's abuse prior to 2016 when survivors started to come forward publicly. She also was sentenced to 18 months of probation.

Klages testified at trial, and in a tearful statement Tuesday, that she did not remember being told about the abuse. She said she had been seeing a therapist to try to remember the conversations, and she apologized to victims if they occurred.

"Even when I don't express it to others, I struggle with what I've been accused of and what my role in this tragedy may have been," she said in court.

Two women testified in November 2018 that they told Klages in 1997 that Nassar had sexually abused them and spoke Tuesday in court ahead of the sentencing. One of the women, Larissa Boyce, testified that Klages held up a piece of paper in front of the then-teenager and warned that if she filed a report there could be serious consequences.

"I am standing here representing my 16-year-old self who was silenced and humiliated 23 years ago and, unfortunately, all of the hundreds of girls that were abused after me," Boyce said.

Nassar was sentenced in 2018 to 40 to 175 years in prison for decades of molestation of young women and girls under the guise of medical treatment.

The other woman who testified but has not publicly identified herself read statements from other alleged victims. The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sex crimes unless they grant permission.

She said the way Klages refused to take responsibility and how their memories and testimony were refuted by the defense was "backwards and disappointing."

"My hope was that she would be sorry and deeply apologize, but that is not the case," she said. "The first and only adult I had ever told just cancelled all of my intuitions that sexual abuse is real and painful. She silenced me not only when I was 14 but for 20 years, as I did not have the confidence to speak up about it again."

As a Spartan fan this whole thing makes me sick. What I find most baffling is that these coaches were not like "WTF???" and booted that doctor. Seriously, I only want people around my athletes that make them better. I as the coach am the only person allowed to shit in their wheaties. Everyone else needs to be keeping them shipshape and happy. And also how can any coach be told of some of the doctor BS and not question it? Of well I am hoping Mel will make us all forget about this crap and do that by winning some games. Which most of us Spartan fans feel will be a challenge. CMD did not leave with a stacked squad. But we will see how it goes. Good coaches can figure out how to get it done.

Yes sadly this is the truth at the moment. But Big Mel Tucker is in town and I like the cut of his Jib. Plus you cannot deny that MSU is a bigger concern than SCum as long as Hairball is walking the sidelines. I realize that OSU fans can hate all but I can never really work a solid hate up for the Buckeyes. The enemy of my enemy will always be my friendenemy. And BTW if MSU can muster 5 wins with this staff then MSU may have actually upgraded at the coaching spot. Because this team is lacking over all speed and size. And that is going to take a few cycles to fully fix.

Granted, OSU has only one rival. Yes, we hate Penn State, but that has far more to do with the diseased culture of their fan base than anything else. Most of us respected coach Dantonio and knew he would be a handful as soon as he took the job. We don't really hate MSU (at least I don't), but we aren't forgetting those two wins that MSU has in the Urban/Ryan era (that resulted in two MSU B1G championships).

But the truth is we don't resent those losses. MSU was better on those days; at least they were better than what Ohio State put on the field on those days. Most of us old timers resent the BS that was 1974 far more than we begrudge you a couple of well-earned wins, though they are more recent.

The fact is playing tOSU is fun. The fans are rabid and the team is uber talented. The issue with SCum for at least the MSU fans is the pure arrogance of the fan base and most of the dumbass students that attend that University. I could go on for quite sometime about the students and the parents of kids that go there acting like they have arrived in life if they are even accepted to the shithole of a college. I like tOSU because they have a blue color vibe with a blue blood football squad. No BS just a true get after it mentality.
I am interested to see MSU this season and see if CMT can make this group into a team with the little time he has had and the lack of experience all over the field. But actually all the B10 will be a good watch. I really think SCum is going to struggle big time. And I am also very interested in Minny. I feel like they caught magic for a season with a ton of Juco guys and a QB that got super hot but we will see how they do now that teams will be looking at them more seriously.
OSU should have a walk this season to 9-0 and then we will see what happens with the BCS.

Hey, Day hasn't lost to Sparty!

I am not going to lie. If there was a way for me and my buddies to beat that guy with a bat until his memory as eliminated from all human memory......we would. Super pissed at the U for allowing this POS to roam free and prey on so many innocent young ladies and even some very young girls. BTW can we focus on the SCum doctor and the Pedsters situation.........make it all end. I think even OSU had a scumbag around for a minute. Madness......BTW that looks like PEEWEE which is frightening.

Also I think Day may leave or crack. Dude seems to feel the weight of the program big time. Urban never seemed to be bothered by it, like in his mind he was as big as the program. But Day seems to be a bit overwhelmed by it all at times. Granted it makes him work like a maniac but it does not bode well for a long ride. Stress can make men do odd things that they would normally never even consider.

Is it just me, or does this guy's take on this situation sound different than the Happy Valley cult's take on their situation?

To be fair, Day has had some stuff to deal with that Urban, or any other coach before him, has had to deal with so I think it's a little early to make that assumption. I would offer the argument that what you are seeing is a guy who cares deeply about his players feeling that his players were being screwed over on an unprecedented scale. Just my, imo.

Agree on the cumulative effect of stress. It's not good.

Report: Pair of Michigan State players suspended indefinitely

Michigan State football could be without two players due to disciplinary reasons when the Spartans kick off their 2020 campaign vs. Rutgers on Saturday. According to MLive.com, Michigan State football players Luke Fulton and Charles Willekes were arrested last month and have since been suspended indefinitely from the team.

According to the MLive.com report, Fulton and Willekes -- both redshirt freshmen linebackers -- were arrested in East Lansing on Sept. 8. Fulton was initially charged with aggravated assault but has since accepted a plea to a lesser charge. As for Willekes, the report indicated that his reason for arrested couldn't be disclosed because his court record isn’t public. Exact details of the arrest have not yet been provided.

Per the report, Fulton took a plea to misdemeanor assault and battery to avoid upfront jail time under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act earlier this month and is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 28.

“In order to avoid any misleading information, even though that record is supposed to be sealed at this point in the case, the charge was reduced to assault and battery,” Mike Nichols, Fulton's lawyer, told MLive.com. “(It) is not an unusual resolution where the person really wasn’t really hurt badly.”

A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Fulton committed to Michigan State as a three-star prospect and ranked as the No. 15 prospect from the state of Ohio in the Class of 2019. Willekes, meanwhile, was walk-on before last season, and only appeared in one game en route to preserving his redshirt.

both redshirt freshmen linebackers

It will be interesting to see how serious Tucker is about his players committing crimes, etc. (i.e. how long they stay suspended). My guess is that (probably) neither will see the field this year. Regardless, if they are still on the team next year, they will still be redshirt freshman (or double redshirt sophomores....) with 4 more years of eligibility.
