Mission Viejo Takes Hard Road
The Southland's No. 1 team wins opener, 55-21, over Los Alamitos, the first of highly ranked foes for Diablos as they prepare for anticipated playoff run.

By Martin Henderson, Times Staff Writer

The Mission Viejo High football team is ranked No. 1 in the Southland and this much seems certain: If the Diablos finish there, they'll have earned it.

Mission Viejo's schedule is every bit as tough as the Diablos are good, starting with Thursday's regionally televised season opener against Los Alamitos that they won, 55-21.

Los Alamitos, another perennial power, entered the game ranked No. 3 in the Southland and from here it doesn't get much easier for either team.

Next up for Mission Viejo is No. 14 Santa Ana Mater Dei, then Huntington Beach Marina, followed by No. 2 Long Beach Poly and, last on the nonleague schedule, Concord De La Salle, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation and had won a record 151 games consecutively before dropping its opener last week against Bellevue, Wash.

The loss by De La Salle surely disappointed Mission Viejo players and coaches — the Diablos wanted to be the ones to end the streak — but if they were down at all it didn't show against Los Alamitos.

Mark Sanchez was solid at quarterback, but Chane Moline stole the show by rushing 16 times for 276 and four touchdowns on runs of one, two, 46 and 52 yards. He also caught an 11-yard touchdown pass, one of two receptions for 31 yards. The Diablos rolled up 580 yards of offense and scored on seven of their first eight possessions.

Moline, who also carried for a two-point conversion, dominated the first half. At one point in the second quarter, he had successive carries of 52, 61 and 40 yards and had 221 yards rushing in 12 carries.

Sanchez completed 10 of 15 passes for 196 yards and touchdowns of 29, 11 and 30 yards, the latter providing a 48-14 lead in the third quarter.

that's our boy Ryan (#35) ready to put a hurtin on the QB

this Mission Viejo junior RB Chane Moline (6'1" 230 4.7) is getting huge reviews too... I would assume the coaches and Williams/Bemoll are working on him already... but doesn't he have an older brother that's been all-world for them the last three years and says he loves OSU...

Big Win for MVHS beating Poly

Poly no longer tops in SoCal

Mission Viejo leaves no doubt in 41-14 thumping.

The Poly High football team ran into a buzzsaw unlike any it has seen on the field in quite a while on Friday night. And by the time Mission Viejo was finished with its carvings, there were no more doubts as to who now officially owns the right to be called the premier prep football squad in the state for 2004.
With senior quarterback Mark Sanchez and junior fullback Chane Moline providing most of the highlights and their dominance up front evident on both sides of the ball, the Diablos handed the Jackrabbits one of their most lopsided defeats in recent memory by pulling away for a 41-14 victory in front of a standing-room-only crowd at Cabrillo High.

Poly came into the matchup seeking revenge for a tough 28-27 loss suffered against Mission Viejo last season and hoping to knock the Diablos from their perch as the third-ranked team in the country according to USA Today.

However, it was the Diablos (4-0) who turned the nationally televised matchup into their own little personal showcase, grabbing a 14-0 lead at the half before physically pounding away at the fifth-ranked Jackrabbits (3-1) and turning the highly anticipated meeting into a not-so-likely result.

Moline carried the ball 20 times for 201 yards and two touchdowns, breaking tackles and creating a few jaw-dropping gallops through the Poly defense in the process.

Meanwhile, Sanchez overcame a slow start to complete 9 of 19 attempts for 138 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the second half that helped break the contest open.

"I'm awfully proud of our football team right now," said Mission Viejo coach Bob Johnson, whose squad also owns victories over perennial powers Los Alamitos (55-21) and Mater Dei (14-7) this season. "That was a pretty good football team we beat tonight. Did I think we would win 41-14? Of course not. But we'll take it. We're on a murderer's row right now and we got one more (Concord De La Salle next Saturday) to go."

The Jackrabbits had success at times moving the ball in the opening half and still remained in striking distance despite 126 yards rushing by Moline at the break. However, an onsides kick to start the second half failed and gave the Diablos the ball at the Poly 49-yard line.

Eight plays later, Sanchez connected with tight end Konrad Reuland from eight yards out to push Mission Viejo in front, 21-0, and give them control of the game.

Poly cut the lead to 21-7 on the ensuing possession on a 24-yard scoring toss from senior quarterback Theo Scott (19-30-2, 166 yards) to junior Terrance Austin.

But the Diablos came right back and increased the lead to 28-7 with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a gutsy 15-yard scoring toss from Sanchez to wideout Sean Fitzgerald on fourth-and-goal play early in the fourth quarter.

By that time, injuries were beginning to have an effect on the Jackrabbits, who lost quarterback Cruz Parsons to a knee injury in the first half and strong safety Laronzo Bursey to a shoulder ailment in the third quarter. Things really got scary for everyone involved with 4:10 left in the fourth quarter.

At the conclusion of a tackle-breaking 38-yard run by Moline, Poly defensive lineman Daniel Imoesiri was injured during the pileup and lay prone on the field for roughly 20 minutes after the play.

Poly coach Raul Lara said the senior likely suffered a bruised sternum. As a precaution, he was immobilized and taken off the field by ambulance to Long Beach Memorial Hospital.
