Mississippi State Bulldogs (official thread)

Exactly.

I know Miss State is about the lowest tier SEC football school, besides maybe Vandy (although they have the academics, so you could argue Moo State is lower), he was still way over his head.

Mike Leach, and to an extent Dan Mullen, shows that Miss State can be a respectable 7-9 wins more seasons than not type of program. That's probably their ceiling, but they don't have to settle for being a 4 win type program either.

Ehh, this still looks pretty bad and mismanaged.
Should have kept the interim tag on for the year.
If you gave it to him, you have to realize it's a 3yr investment minimum with OJT.
If you're going to rip it off, probably best to at least let the year play out and demote him during the off season. Doing it in the last 2 weeks gains you what exactly?
Dibs on hiring Jim Fisher?

I’d say that’s the case in most circumstances. But a coach unexpectedly dying a week after the regular season put them in a very strange position.

That's why you leave the interim tag on him for a year.
I go back to when we unexpectedly canned Tressel. Fickell picked it up, but even though he was a... disappointing first time Head Coach... it was handled carefully to save face for everyone, make sure he had future opportunities, etc.

Fair point. I can only respond by saying there’s a reason why Ohio State is a football program, athletic department, and university of a caliber that is well regarded while Mississippi State is Mississippi State.

Mullen was from the north east too and fit in well.

Mullen won enough games for them to tolerate him.
but from everything I've ever heard, he was universally loathed in Starkville, and didn't "fit in" at all.

that part of Mississippi is seriously like stepping back in time.
it's very rural. mostly farmland.
and everyone there is almost comically polite and friendly.

as in genuinely nice people almost to a fault.

Dan Mullen is kind of a prick and rubbed everyone the wrong way.

Here are contract terms for new Mississippi State football coach Jeff Lebby

Mississippi State football will pay new coach Jeff Lebby an average of $4.51 million in base compensation during his contract, according to a term sheet distributed to members of the media on Monday.

The contract's official length is listed as four years, the longest permitted by Mississippi state law to public employees.

Lebby, whose appointment was made official on Sunday, replaces the fired Zach Arnett, whose 2023 salary was listed at $3 million.

Lebby's average base compensation would have ranked 13th in the SEC this season, above Arnett and Vanderbilt's Clark Lea.

The contract is laden with incentives. He will receive $50,000 if he is named SEC Coach of the Year and $100,000 if he is named national coach of the year. He also will get $125,000 for every regular-season SEC victory, beginning with the fifth SEC win of each season.

Lebby's contract includes a $100,000 bonus for appearing in the SEC title game and an additional $150,000 for winning it.

He will receive the highest of the following available bonuses in any given season:
  • $100,000 for participation in any SEC Tier 3 bowl game
  • $150,000 for participation in the following bowl games: TaxSlayer, ReliaQuest, Duke's Mayo/Las Vegas, Music City, Texas or Liberty
  • $200,000 for participation in the Citrus Bowl
  • $250,000 for participation in the first round of the College Football Playoff
  • $350,000 for advancing to a CFP quarterfinal
  • $500,000 for advancing to a CFP semifinal
  • $750,000 for playing in the national title game
  • $1 million for winning a national title
