Legend
Comes out on March 6th. Anyone else getting it? I sprung for MLB 10 but not last year's edition. I'm still on the fence about getting this one. If you don't own any of The Show titles, I suggest at least giving it a rent. It's one of the best sports series around.

I too bought MLB 10 but not last years.. this one looks pretty sweet with the move.. thinking of getting this and trying to find a used PS3 move to go with it..

Thinking of taking cuts, instead of mashing X, at pitches gets me pretty pumped about this game - would assume it will read the angle for inside-out swings to go opposite field or pull the inside the pitch down the line.. anyone know for sure how the move will work?

I've wanted to get this, but I can't bring myself to eject my Skyrim disc. Plus I have FIFA that I want to get back to, which I only played for about a month. [censored].
I've heard the new FIFA is pretty awesome - I've been stuck on BF3, when I have time, maybe wait until I'm burned out and find a used copy somewhere.. tired of shelling out $60 to play a game for a week and get bored with it.

I mean, going through the "hardest games of all time" thread, really made me long for those types of games.. the closest I've come is Mario Brothers Wii & Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii.. but even those were beaten within a week.. kind of sad that I'm wishing Nintendo would pump out a Star Fox or Battletoads for the Wii instead of getting excited over the next big thing on PS3/XBOX

My disc arrived yesterday and today was my first chance to play. Having not played a baseball game since MLB 2000 on the original PlayStation, I've been a bit overwhelmed to start off. This game has so many options and so many things that can be tweaked it's kinda difficult to get your bearings as a new player.

My weakness as a gamer has always been games that emphasized memorizing and executing combos, which means I'll probably be stuck on the most basic controls for as long as I play.

This is not a game that can be played casually as far as I can tell. It's not like other sports games where you can get into a bit of a flow and let your attention level drift in and out. It requires constant sharpness just to be able to recognize pitches and have proper timing.

The most frustrating thing so far is the CPU pitching. I know Josh Johnson is an excellent pitcher, but nobody throws 95% of their pitches for strikes. You have to go up there hacking or you'll spend the entire game in 0-2 counts. Dusty Baker would probably sport constant wood playing a game like this.

It takes a little getting used to.

A tip: head over to the forums at Operation Sports. They've got an excellent community there with roster help, settings help, etc. You'll usually find what you're looking for there, and the guys that are regulars there are great help.

What level difficulty are you playing on? If you are playing on a lower level that might be why you are seeing 95% strikes. I would think the easier difficulty would cater to the people that never play and want to swing at everything. I don't play baseball games because I can't tell the difference between a ball and a strike.

Interesting. I'll check into that. I put it on the easiest setting because I knew I'd have a difficult time starting off. It seems like for me at least it might have made things more difficult. I mean, 95% of pitches for strikes and 80% of those are on the black... it's insane. You have no shot at getting into favorable counts, let alone drawing a walk or elevating the pitch count.

Will do. I had to do the same thing when I picked up FIFA in the fall because it had been about ten years since I had played a soccer video game. Reading the threads there helped a lot.

This game is awesome. Fucking awesome. The graphics are incredible. I, like you jlb, have actually never played any of these games, so I am going in somewhat blind.

I finally have my pitching settings to where I am really happy with them. I am testing out things in exhibition games with 3rd and 4th starters, figuring those are the guys who should pitch "average" games. I am using the new pulse pitching, which I really like, on HOF. I used Arroyo last night, gave up 1 run on 9 hits in 6 innings, walked a couple, struck out 3 or 4, threw 70 of 101 pitches for strikes and got out of a couple of jams...I can use those settings for a real season.

Where I am really getting boned under is hitting...I suck at it, continue to suck at it, and keep sucking at it. I am using timing plus zone, because I think timing is too easy and you have too many crappy swings because you don't control where you swing. I switched the view from catcher to catcher classic and used the sliders to slow the ball down a bit...but I still only get 2-4 hits a game and I have yet to score my first run  So i am still working on my sliders and my settings for hitting.

I let the computer field and run the bases...I don't want my lack of joystick ability to figure into the game that much, and I don't want it to take 3 hours to play a game either.

jlb PM me if you want any info on my settings...I might be able to help you out a bit.

I've played around with settings a bit and may be getting closer to a sweet spot.

My last game before I made changes was ridiculous. I struck out 27 times in 14 innings. Trailing 3-1 going into the bottom of the ninth, I got a couple runs to tie it up. In the 14th, the other team got two runs to pull ahead, but I won it in the bottom half of the inning with a 3-run bomb.

The last couple games have been a bit more balanced as far as what happens from one AB to the next. 3-2 win against the Pirates followed by a 5-4 win against the Brewers. In the latter of the two, Nick Masset took a 5-0 lead into the top of 9th and had to be pulled with runners on 1st & 3rd after giving up the four runs. I'd say they've captured his gas can abilities nicely.

I ended adjusting the hitting and pitching difficutly up, and then back down to rookie. After adjusting back down I went in favor of fiddling with contact, consistency, accuracy and pitch speed to get the pitch variety and hitting conditions that seemed reasonable to me. I'm using timing hitting, and I like that you don't square the ball up all the time and sometimes swing over or under the ball. Against league average pitchers it seems like I'll be in the 6-10 hit range for a nine inning game. That's about where I want to be.

I'm getting more pitches out of the strike zone now. It's nice to get the occasional 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 count. I even drew a walk at one point. There still isn't enough of that kind of thing compared to live baseball, but it's about as good as I can hope for at this point. Even with the variation that I'm seeing, if I get a first pitch strike I can count on the next one being out of the zone, and vice versa. Not ideal, but better than it was. Even so, in that last game I played Shawn Marcum was pumping strikes in left and right. In the fifth inning he had thrown just 35 pitches and 32 were strikes. Of those strikes, on two of them that I recall were out of the zone. Insane. He finally started to have a more realistic rate in the innings to follow as he wore down.

I'll keep tinkering with it, and I'm sure I'll have to bump things up a bit as I get more accustomed to the game.

I'm still getting fucking worked trying to hit. I have the pitching right where I want it...I shut out the Marlins one night, give up 16 hits and 6 runs to the Phillies the next...so I have good variety. Unfortunately I am regressing on my hitting. Worsley for Phily was Sandy Fucking Koufax last night on me, 1 hit, 21 Ks. Yes, 21. The curveball is raping my ass sideways, I can't hit it, can't recognize it, can't lay off it. It is almost always in the dirt, and I always miss it, and I always look like a drunken wombat swinging at it. I am throwing between 59-65% strikes, which is perfect...the computer is racking up 75-78%, mostly because I can't not swing at the fucking curveball. Goddammit.
