If Beckham becomes an owner of an expansion franchise and Sheikh Mansour probably owning a new New York franchise, I wonder if a club is going to disperse/fold. I don't think the MLS will relegate/promote and I don't know about having 21 clubs when most world leagues have 20 or under.

If a club folds, I'd bet on Chivas USA.

And while Beckham's contract with MLS, signed when he joined the L.A. Galaxy in 2007, included an option to purchase an 'expansion franchise', it has been revealed his advisors have been in talks with the league about possible locations for a new team.

Fuck that.... Fuck Don Garber. Did NY REALLY need another MLS team? How is LA doing with their second MLS team? :shake:

This will either cause an arms race in NY, or it will absolutely bury the Red Bulls. I see the first few years being highly competitive, and then Henry retires and the Red Bulls are back to Metrostar status.

Had this posted on my FB, and couldn't help but laugh.

Two in NY before any expansion in the south. That, alone, is disgusting.

I have a feeling they're going to be like their management: a single team that every team in the league will love to hate.

Even the teams out west will hate these fuckers.

IMO, expanding the MLS down south would be incredibly difficult. I just don't see the following or dedication towards soccer as they have towards baseball and football.

I would like to see the MLS take another shot at Miami, though. David Beckham may try and make that happen.

Agreed. However, the league has to break back into the southern market and have success at some point if the league wants to make the jump to the next level.

Miami's the most logical... I know Real Madrid had interest in having a team there as well. Atlanta's been thrown about as a potential expansion city and Orlando is trying to make some noise about Orlando City SC wanting to make the jump.

I don't think the league wants to introduce relegation and I don't know about going over 20 teams without having relegation (most world leagues are at 20 or under). My guess would be that Chivas would be sold and move, if any more movement happens.

I can't say the league is filtering players to California and New York, because that happens in other leagues too (London, Manchester, Madrid, etc.).

Heck, my only wish is that the area around Crew Stadium gets re-developed to add dining, retail or otherwise to draw people, but that's a pipe dream (it means the Fairgrounds would have to be demolished or something).

Is this the Orlando Pirates that appear on every FIFA game?! If so, I'm all for it.

I also agree with the Atlanta area as a suitable expansion location.

On the other hand, I gotta LOL at the MetroStars for getting stuck with their stupid [censored]ing name while the new franchise gets a decent one.

Wiz...Wizards...Sporting KC.

Kidding. Hope Columbus doesn't get marginalized or even more marginalized (if already happened).

They're a South African club. I was always confused as to who they were as well before watching the '10 WC & finding out many of the South African players were on that team.

Chivas has been the popular choice to fold or move for awhile now. They really should do one or the other, because they're always going to be an afterthought in LA.

As far as future expansion is concerned, I don't see MLS staying at 20 and trying to be like other world leagues, but more like most sports leagues in the U.S.A.. They have a salary cap, they don't have promotion/relegation, they don't have a single table, they do have a playoff that results in Champions League qualification, and they've even gone with an unbalanced schedule. My assumption is that MLS will continue to expand by moving into the south, and could expand enough to warrant a format similar one of the other sports leagues in the country. I don't see 30+ teams being out of the realm of possibility.
