Go Bucks
So this summer I'll be moving to Chicago to start my first real job out of college. I'm probably going to have at least one roommate, possibly two-three others but no more than that. I'll be working downtown in the financial district.

Any ideas on where I should live? Hearing Wicker Park is a cool area. Same with Wrigleyville and Lincoln Park.

Want to rent my condo?

In all seriousness, Lincoln Park or Wrigleyville are very good choices. It all depends on what you are looking for in a neighborhood. If you want a big city feel and live in a high-rise, I would suggest Streeterville/River North. Lincoln Park is nice, however it is expensive to live in the prime areas(East of Clark-South of Diversey and North of Armitage. Sheffield/Armitage area is decent and close to DePaul--think smoking hot college chicks If you work-out and looking to join a gym, the DePaul facility is open the public--heard very good things, once again about the chicks. Also rent will be lower in the immediate area since its basically college housing. Wrigleyville will be a mix of people just out of college and families. I live in Wrigleyville and cannot stand being here. However I am 30 and married. When I bought my place 5 years ago, I thought it was the greatest thing ever to be able to stumble home from many many bars--and taco bell. Now it is just annoying. Wicker Park/Bucktown is an interesting area. It was mainly gentrified by the Hipster set. I actually prefer going out in that area rather than my own now. WP/Bucktown is a touch older crowd--think 27/28. Most of the people who live there dislike the LP/LV kids and vice versa. When I was boozing it up all the time with fourteenandoh, we rarely ever went out to WP/Bucktown. It was about a $25 cab ride and we had to commit to stay there all night. Rent would probably be on par with Wrigleyville/Lakeview, and less than LP. Another thing you should consider is how will you be getting around? Im assuming you will take public transit. The EL is usually the better option, when choosing which stop to live closest too. Especially since you are going to Financial District--LaSalle/Jackson. To take a bus there, you will be one of the last stops--probably about 45-60 minute commute during peak times. Train cuts that in half--even quicker on the Blue Line from WP/Bucktown. If you need parking--try and get it with the unit, otherwise stay away from LP. Street parking in LP is very difficult, you will circle for hours at times looking for a spot. Parking in Wrigleyville will be easier, aside from Cubs home games. Bucktown/WP is hit or miss.

I can go on and on about areas--however the best thing for you to do is get to Chicago and hangout/eat/drink/walk around each neighborhood. Do not even start looking at units to rent until you narrow down the hood. Find what is the best for you. I have lived in the city for almost 8 years now. If you have any questions shoot me a PM and I will glad to answer/help out.

Best of luck.

What he said is all true.

Wicker Park / Bucktown was awesome up until about 15 years ago, now it's just pretty cool. Aside from seeing shows at the Metro or a couple other bars, I never hit Wrigleyville. Yeah, not a cubs fan either.

Wicker Park is still where it's at as far as I'm concerned.

To throw in another location that hasn't been mentioned, I lived in the Gold Coast, near Lincoln Park. Awesome location - many condos to be rented at reasonable rates in this housing climate. Close walking distance to the beach, park, restaurants & bars, and a short commute to the financial district.

Thanks everyone. I think the first thing I need to do is take another visit there. Preferably on a Saturday during football season to check out some bars and then the night life after.

I'm looking to find a place that's between $800-$1100 per person per month. Also, what are the utilities like in Chicago? I've heard some people pay like $200/month to heat or cool their place because of how inefficient a lot of the brick buildings can be.

I can't see why your apartment matters, you'll be sleeping under your desk when you're not being protested

Getting some roomates will get you into your pricepoint in a nice, nice place - guys in the ground floor duplex in my building (3 year old luxury walkup) can't be paying more than $800-$900 each on average... their apartment has 2 balconies and even has one parking spot...

Spent last weekend in Chicago. Super pumped about moving there! I was looking into the south loop and decided that, that place sucks. Really love all of the neighborhoods north of loop.

One of my prospective roommates is going to be working for a steel company in easy chicao. Shitty I know. How long of a commute would that be? <1hour? He doesn't want to live as far north as Lincoln park because he's afraid it will take too long to get to work with traffic. He wants to live in like the West loop or some shit...

easy chicao???

West Loop is not so bad, if you are married and/or over 30 years of age. Not a whole lot of action.

In order for both of you to have the best of both, I would once again suggest Bucktown/Wicker Park. Tons of bars/restaurants/nightlife and very easy access to 90/94.

Typo. Easy = East, a.k.a "Gary" a.k.a the worst place on earth lol. He's worried about the commute, although he'll be car pooling with other people that live out in Wicker.

I like Wicker, Lincoln, Bucktown, Old Town, Wrigleyville, and the Gold Coast area too. I REALLY don't want to be in the west loop or the south loop. My friend is clearly going to cave on location when he sees the amount of ass in the northern neighborhoods and the amount of old people in the loop areas.

Bob was sitting on the plane when a guy took the seat beside
him.

The guy was an emotional wreck, pale, hands shaking, moaning in
fear.

"What's the matter?" Bob asked.

"I've been transferred to Chicago, there are crazy people there.
They've got lots of shootings, gangs, race riots, drugs, poor public
schools and the highest crime rate in the nation."

Bob replied, "I've lived in Chicago all my life. It's not as bad
as the media says. Find a nice home, go to work, mind your own business
and enroll your kids in a nice private school. It's as safe a place as
anywhere in the world."

The guy relaxed and stopped shaking and said, "Oh, thank you.
I've been worried to death. But if you live there and say it's OK, I'll
take your word for it. What do you do for a living?"

"I'm a tail gunner on a Budweiser truck."
