MSU LOSES to Grand Valley State

Don't know if anyone just caught this on ESPeNis, but scUM State just lost an exhibition game to Grand Valley State. It was AT scUM State, believe the final was 86-83 in 2OT. That's gotta make scUM's loss to Appalachian State in football sit a little better. This wasn't a gift, this was a for-real game, and Pre-Seaon POY Neitzel went off for a whoppin 12 points, including pretty much an airball to end the game. Funny as hell!

How ironic. I was sitting there this week watching the BTN and seeing the highlights of everyone just killing their exhibition opponents and wondered if anyone had ever managed to lose one.

Now I know at least 1 has.

Tom Izzo was very quick to take the blame for this.

Played multiple lineups, made a bad coaching call with the late timeout. Also said GVU deserved credit, and that his players need to do better.

But, he took primary blame.

"I have to take most of the blame," said MSU coach Tom Izzo. "I juggled lineups, and we had some bizarre lineups on the floor at times. It was not a very well-coached or well-played game by the Spartans.
"But give credit to Grand Valley. It was no fluke. I think we played one of the best teams in Division II. They outrebounded us, they outdefended us and they outplayed us."

Weis should take notes.

At one point Izzo had an all-guard line up in -- in the final minute of the game in the second overtime. The big guy for GVSU got the ball inside and scored, putting them up by 5 I think. I was pretty confused as to why Izzo went with that lineup in such a crucial, must-stop situation.

It's preseason, the game doesn't count. I'm sure if the Spartans regular starters and lineups got their usual minutes they would have cruised.

They shouldn't need their usual minutes to cruise. They're supposed to be one of the best and deepest teams in the country.

It's an exhibition game, who cares? If it's a regular season game they win because they wouldn't have given as much time to the reserves and freshman. They should be able to win that game with their reserves anyway, but they played poorly, no big deal. This is just going to make them work harder and they're still going to win the Big Ten in my opinion.
