NASCAR Poll: Is it a sport?

Is NASCAR a sport?

First rule of a sport - it must involve a ball. NASCAR - no ball. Not a sport. It is a competition. It may even be "sporting"

Golf, while having a ball, is also not a sport.... for the same reason bowling is not a sport. Nonathletic people can play it at a reasonably high level and there is no running involved. No running = not a sport.
John Kruk is a sport.

They bill the Indy 500 as a "Spectator Sport" does that imply that the sport is to see how many beers you can drink and if so does the same coincide for NASCAR?

NeckCAR is just an excuse for rednecks to get drunk on Sunday. They had solid excuses for the other 6 days of the week but were having problems with Sunday, thus the overwhelming popularity of the non sport.

I imagine a wrestler or a boxer might take issue with these two points.
Why? Is there some shame in taking part in a competition that isn't a "sport?" I mean seriously, who fucking cares what you call it... sport.. competition.. whatever.... if you love boxing, or you're a wrestler, what do you gain from the label "Sport" vs. "Competition?" Not a fucking thing.

Has a ball, though a modified one. Involves running, though modified running.

I took this post to mean the post of mine you quoted was a home run.... but then I figured you may be suggesting that Prince is unathletic and plays at a reasonably high level. Which would mean you missed the point I was making which was "involves running" Prince could be 480 pounds.... if he runs to first base on a grounder.... he meets the criteria of a guy playing a sport.

As for the notion that ordinary people can play golf at a high level:

Lots of folks play basketball, football, baseball, softball at a "pretty high skill level" too.

The pro level of major sports is a matter of less than 1% of the population. Out of that population only a micro faction can step out of their own sport and compete at the same, or near same level in another pro sport. Dieon Sanders was good enough to start for the Reds, but nowhere near the athlete he was in football. Michael Jordan never got past a tryout level with the White Sox and never made the tour as a golfer. Johnny Bench quickly gave up the idea that he'd make the tour. Bo Jackson remains the only athlete I can remember that could play two sports at the same high level as to be a star in each.
