the guys in the pit crew are athletes.....you try lugging that jack around and putting the car up in one pump...

also....lets see you be the right rear tire changer with your back to swerving cars peeling out inches behind you....

the drivers are not athletes, but some of the pit crew guys are

I love racing but I enjoy going to the local track more than sitting by a TV watching for hours. I watch for a few go do a project and repeat, repeat.....

Besides for years I was a Bill Elliott fan and now that he is semi-retired I just can't get all rev'd up about any driver. Well maybe Ryan Newman and that is only because he a a SB kid. My heart is no longer in it.....

I've followed NASCAR for 30 years, am not a redneck, and can't stand country music.

NASCAR was my second favorite sporting event to watch on TV, behind college football, because every race mattered equally in the championship. The past few years I was watching NASCAR races on Sundays instead of regular season NFL games. Then last year they ruined that by just basically making the top 10 drivers equal before the 'chase' in the last 10 races. This arranged 'playoff' setup takes a lot away from races 2 through 25.

NASCAR story

I was an exec with Goodyear... and Penske opened up a new track in LA... Gdyr owned a double loge on the finish line...

Inaugural race at the track... We've got 100 invitees in the loge... and we've arranged for a number of the drivers to come up before the race... One at a time...

Mark Martin comes in... hob nobs for a while... then everyone circles him and he fields questions... Guy asks "Mark, do you have a strategy for the race today.. and will you tell us?" .. Martin says... "well yes I do".. place goes dead silent to listen... everyone waiting for the detailed strategy and all the technical maneuverings...which turns are the keys... car adjustments.. etc.. Martin continues, "I've done some careful analysis of this race and this track... so my strategy today is that when that flag drops to start the race I'm immediately going to bury the accelerator right to the floor ".. hesitates for a couple seconds.. "and keep it there"...

The invitees are still riveted.. waiting for addl words of wisdom... but Martin's done and he just smiles.. I'm roaring...

Another thing I'm wondering about...

Why are their hats often made in camo designs?

every race car driver is semi-retarded, as are the fans.

Oiler, that hat question...well I think that's self-explanatory. I live in Athens, Ohio and the two seem to go together like peas & carrots...Nascar & Camo that is.

Nonetheless, I will go on to say that I am by no means a Nascar fan. For me, it is comparable to the likes of watching grass grow or paint drying.

It is not easy for me to not be a Nascar fan though. Half of my immediate family is bizarrely obsessed with it and I spend the majority of my time at Grandma's defending my opposing position...either that or standing up for multiculturalism (another massive topic in and of itself).

Nonetheless, no, Nascar is not a sport. The guys in the pit crew might work hard, but so does my stepdad at his Goodyear factory. He lifts a lot of weight and he has to do it fast, but he is not an athlete by any means. He will say to me..."they sit in that car and sweat in those hot suits for 4 hours without stopping". My response is generally something along the lines of..."well, if you put a 400lb. woman in the middle of the street in a jumpsuit in July, don't you think she'd sweat profusely too? Is she an athlete?" On and on we banter, but I usually get the better end of him. What it comes down to me is...does the active "athlete" actually need to workout EVER, or go to the gym to train any muscles at all? Even tennis and golf players hit the gym. Not a knock on those two, but it is just to further my point.

Not to generalize the entire Nascar nation, but from my own personal experiences, the most enthusiastic fans tend to me a bit more...how do I say it, "overly enthusiastic for the rural side of living". Not that there's anything wrong with some country living, but my stepdad for one refers to his friends as "the good ole' boys" and the people of his little town as "the commonfolk"....I kid you not. They both drive me insane.

I would not consider myself a huge Nascar fan, but I do take a small amount of interest in it. I would consider myself a huge fan of motorsports in general, and tend to have an interest more in the open wheel, and Sports car type of racing. We generally go to the track 4-6 times a year for races, Mostly at Mid-Ohio, but we do usually take in one NASCAR event per year. The past few years we have gone to the short track race in Bristol TN. , and we ususally go to Indy for at least one race per year.

That being said, I have attended several Nascar races, at Indy, Michigan, and Bristol Tn. I generally go because it is a great time. I am about as non red-neck as you can get, as are the guys I go with. We go probably more for the party than the actual racing when it comes to NASCAR. In Bristol for example it is a beautiful area up in the mountains. We "camp out" in a really nice RV, drink tons of beer, play cards, meet a lot of "interesting people" sit around a fire every night and eat a lot of food that is not really good for you. It is like a buckeye tailgate that lasts for 3 days. I will agree for the most part that there are a ton of redneck nascar fans, but when you go and party at a track for a weekend, there is never any problems, they are generally friendly, outgoing and not real bright. All in all I would equate NASCAR, or any racing for that matter to Hockey. On TV it does not come off nearly as well as it does in person. It is quite exhilerating to be 50 feet away from a car when they first fire it up, or when it blows past you at 180 and a second later you get the blast of air and the smell of racing in your face, and your whole body shakes from the sounds of the engines. You really cannot get a feel for the actual speed on TV.

I always wonder how you can talk to guys who say they are car fanatics but do not get into racing. If you love cars and horsepower how could you not be fascinated by seeing them driven at the very edge of their capabilities.

As far as being a sport I am indifferent on that, I don't really think it is. But as far as drivers being athletes, I do not care what type of car you are driving it takes an amazing amount of coordination, and skill to control a vehicle going that fast for that amount of time. I have been lucky enough to get out on the track a few times at Mid-Ohio in a fairly high performance car and I am telling you after 15-20 minutes you are spent. To do that for 2 hours surrounded by other cars would be insane ( I guess this may not apply so much for NASCAR since it is almost all on an oval) but they are much closer, and spend a longer time in the car.

I will agree, on TV it is pretty boring I will not watch NASCAR on TV.

Sorry for the long post, but motorsports are something I am passionate about.

I personally despise NASCAR and I hate it when people call it a sport. What is so physically challenging about it?
I'm indifferent... but let's give respect where due... YOU try driving a car at 210 mph 3 inches from the car on your left... 4 inches from a concrete wall on your right... and 6 inches from the bumper of the car ahead of you... and blink... let's see who's athletic...
