Report: Orlando is 'Clear Frontrunner' to Host 2020 NBA Postseason

Orlando has emerged as the frontrunner to host the 2020 NBA postseason, according to The Athletic's Sam Amick and Shams Charania.

The league is reportedly considering a plan that would have, "players fully training in mid-June and playing by mid-July," per Amick and Charania.

The NBA is continuing to explore contingencies for the resumption of the 2019-20 season, and the league is reportedly looking to host the playoffs in one or two quarantined sites. Las Vegas and Orlando are the most likely cities to host the playoffs, though Orlando apparently has some structural advantages.

"Disney World has the hotel space and basketball-ready venues necessary to get this job done," Amick wrote. "The fact that it’s private property could make it easier to control the outside element, which is a major bonus when it comes to limiting interactions between NBA personnel and the public."

A quarantined playoffs in Orlando would likely be held at the Disney Wide World of Sports complex. Walt Disney World is reportedly "confident," it will host basketball in 2020.

"We are confident we'll be hosting the NBA in some fashion," a source from Disney World told Yahoo Sports' Keith Smith. "It may not be the entire league, but we believe the NBA will be here to at least finish part of their season. Still hurdles to cross, but we are preparing as if that is the case."

Hell, yeah...Sports fans are ready for some football, baseball, hockey, basketball, or anything.....Look what NASCAR pulled in Sunday:

NASCAR’s return to racing last Sunday at Darlington figured to put up big TV numbers in a world still largely on lockdown, and didn’t disappoint. The Real Heroes 400, run without spectators, averaged a 3.71 household rating and 6.3 million viewers on FOX Sunday, which made it the highest rated and most-watched Cup Series race outside of the Daytona 500 since Atlanta in 2017 (3.8/6.6m). It also represented a 38% increase over the last race at Phoenix on March 8, before the lockdown began.

2020 NBA return format: Owners approve 22-team plan to resume 2019-20 regular season

If all goes according to plan, the 2019-20 NBA season will have a conclusion.

The league's Board of Governors approved a 22-team plan on Thursday to resume the season at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, the NBA announced Thursday.

Each team would play eight additional regular-season games, and the six teams involved that are not currently in a playoff position would be the Pelicans, Trail Blazers, Suns, Kings, Spurs and Wizards. If the ninth seed is within four games of the eight seed at the end of the regular season, there would be a play-in tournament to determine the final playoff spot.

Commissioner Adam Silver is targeting a July 31 date to return to play, while the last possible date for Game 7 of the NBA Finals would be Oct. 12, as ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski first reported. The league's draft lottery will take place on Aug. 25 and the 2020 NBA draft will be held on Oct. 15.

Kyrie Irving proposed players starting their own league in call urging boycott of NBA season, per report

Kyrie Irving continues to share big ideas on the immediate future of the NBA

Kyrie Irving has become the leader of the growing movement within the National Basketball Players Association to boycott the remainder of the 2019-20 NBA season, and on Tuesday, he reportedly took part in yet another call in which he urged Brooklyn Nets teammates not to play, according to Stefon Bondy of the New York Daily News. But that wasn't the only radical idea that he proposed. According to Bondy, Irving also argued that players could start their own league.

Irving also argued that players could start their own league.

Re: Kyrie Irving signed a 4 year / $136,490,600 contract with the Brooklyn Nets, including $136,490,600 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $34,122,650. In 2019-20, Irving will earn a base salary of $31,742,000.

If the players started their own league: Does Irving realize that their new "players league" has no arenas to play in, has no season ticket holders, has no billion dollar TV contract, and has no merchandising contracts/sponsors, etc? How would this new "players league" generate enough income to pay him and the others their $39M a year? Even if he could get a significant number of current NBA players to join him, it would take years to grow into what the NBA is today. The billionaire owners aren't going to just fold up their tent, there will would be a bidding war for new players (think about the old ABA here).

I can't sit through an entire NBA game so I saw about 5 minutes of one, but I saw plenty of people losing it on social media before the game even tipped off.

People who don't even watch the sport tuned in to see what they'd do then went to social media to feign outrage and vow to never watch it again. The people who like the NBA and actually follow it mostly had no issues with it.

I love watching people lose their minds over anthem protests, etc.. Of all the things to get upset about - 5 minutes of something that does nothing to you, and no one is forcing you to watch it.

The social justice messaging on the jerseys threw me a little at first, as I don't know everyone in the NBA by the way they look and move.

I'm watching the game and I thought, "That's a moving pick on ....uh....educational reform?"

I didn’t know they were doing that. I’m going to have to tune in.....I really want to see “civil discourse” pickup a technical foul.

The 8 regular season games already have guys resting for the playoffs. Don't know what was magical about 8 games but it seems 3 to shake off the rust would've been plenty, and some teams appear to agree.

Last year, I more than tripled my money betting on the NBA Playoffs (Thank you Toronto). While I am certainly not going to guarantee that type of return this year, there are a few matchups I really like. Here is where I placed my wagers this year:

My picks

Lakers over Blazers – Bet $350 to win $67

The Trail Blazers have been on fire since entering the bubble. Jusuf Nurkic is back, Zach Collins is back, and Damian Lillard has gone full Super Saiyan. Portland more closely resembles the team that made the Western Conference finals last season than the group who was below average throughout the year.

Meanwhile, the Lakers have looked incredibly sloppy. They’re shooting horrific from 3-point range, Anthony Davis has disappeared, and LeBron is leaving weird cryptic codes in each press conference.

I don’t care. It’s the Lakers, it’s LeBron James, and it’s Anthony Davis. They’re not losing to a Portland team who was a Caris LeVert jump shot away from missing the playoffs.

Portland can’t stop anybody, and their best wing defender is…non-existent. Who is guarding LeBron in this series? Your choices are Zach Collins, Gary Trent Jr., and Carmelo Anthony. No matter your answer, it’s wrong. I am not sure how any of those guys can hold him under 50.

Sometimes, incentives tell us everything we need to know about teams. The Lakers haven’t played well in the bubble because they didn’t have to. Meanwhile, the Blazers needed to fight, scrap, and claw in every game to earn the 8-seed. When the playoffs start, both teams will be playing with similar urgency. Lakers in 5.

Miami over Pacers – Bet $500 to win $156
Here’s our money series. This series gives reasonable, albeit not great odds to a Miami team who should destroy this current iteration of the Pacers.

At full strength, Indiana and Miami would be a great matchup. The problem, Indiana isn’t at full strength. Domantas Sabonis is out, and Victor Oladipo looks incredibly rusty. Sabonis is one thing, but without the extra punch Oladipo gives the Pacers off the bounce, I am not sure how they can score.

T.J. Warren has been the answer so far in the bubble. He’s put up a few MONSTER performances, including a 50-burger over the 76ers. Put me in the “I don’t think T.J. Warren can continue to drop 30+ nightly” camp. Miami’s defense is too good, too versatile, and has too many favorable matchups.

Heat should handle their business relatively easily.

Rockets over Thunder – Best $150 to win $100
This is the riskiest bet on the board. But with the odds at -150, it also provides the biggest payout, even if the Rockets are still the favorites.

What Oklahoma City has accomplished so far this year is impressive, but Houston has more talent, has been slightly better throughout the season, and is a tough matchup.

The Rockets don’t have a big man to defend the post, but Steven Adams isn’t “let him eat in the post” type of scorer. Chris Paul loves to punish bigs in the pick-and-roll, but the Houston Rockets don’t have a big to punish. The Rockets struggle to clean the glass defensively, but Oklahoma City ranked 29th in the NBA in offensive rebound rate.

Russell Westbrook may miss the first couple of games with a quad injury, but I trust Harden to carry the team for 1-2 games and trust Russ to eventually play, even if he has to hobble out there with his entire quadricep duct-taped to the rest of his leg. – Also, while missing Westbrook is not ideal, the Rockets have technically been better with Westbrook off the court this season.
