Big Ten Announces Commitment to Event Equality for Men and Women on Big Ten Network
National network pledges to equal number of men's and women's events by third year.

On the one-year anniversary of the announcement of the Big Ten Network, Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany revealed that the Big Ten Network will become the first national network to commit to "event equality" for men's and women's sports on all network-controlled media within the first three years of launch. Delany announced this historic commitment to gender equity today during a media teleconference outlining the progress of the Big Ten Network. "The Big Ten has an incredible history of supporting gender equity and today's announcement signals our continued dedication to women's athletics," said Delany. "The Big Ten Network's commitment to `event equality' is a first in the history of a national sports network. Combined with the compelling athletic competition, university-produced programming and alcohol-free advertising policy, today's announcement positions this enterprise as the most balanced and equitable sports network in America today - one in total alignment with the values of our great universities."

My guess is that they're doing it for the publicity. I think that if a company doesn't have "make money" as the top three priorities, it probably won't be around long enough to accomplish any other priorities.

Eh... its stupid...

I mean... Football from Noon to 9pm straight... but... don't forget to tune in at midnight for 9 straight hours of field hockey highlights.

They can show what they want... but... in the end... they can't make the viewers watch it equally.

My take boils down to this. During non-football/basketball/baseball programs, they are going to have a minimal share whether they air men's volleyball, women's field hockey, synchronized swimming or virtually any other non-major sport. If nobody is going to be watching regardless of pogramming, might as well put up a front to generate some goodwill/good PR.

I, for one, would actually LOVE to see more women's volleyball on tv and any sport where they wear skirts and run around. I say bring it.

And I think this is a really good point.

Women's college volleyball is the best women's sport. IMO. Actual action on the court, rather than fundamentally sound excuse given for women's basketball, despite unwatchable sloppy play. Outstanding eye candy could also help ratings. The uniforms that they wear are incredible.
