NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

One major difference is that Bush is keeping his mouth shut. MoC appeared to many members of the media to be the smoking gun. Apparently, he was just holding the smoking gun.

Actually, it's pretty clear that there was no gun. Clarett was just smoking.

That doesn't sound good for Bush or possibly USC....

I could be wrong, but I get the impression Bush doesnt give a shit. They cant take away his NFL money, and I dont think he cares about much else. That impression is probably influenced by the media, which would explain why so many people hate OSU. Still, the impression I get is that he doesn't care whats happens to USC.

What makes you say this? I can't think of any reason Bush would want to hang USC out to dry, except for the fact that they wouldn't give him a sideline pass for this year's Rose Bowl.

I wonder if he cares about his Heisman?

They (they being the Downtown Athletic Club) can take that away....

If anything I think Bush figures he can get away with the whole thing (ie: no consequences to USC) so long as he refuses to give any information to the NCAA. Remember, the Bush family is the one making claims of extortion... I'm not sure about the rules of evidence in a court or grand jury (specifically, if it becomes public domain and the NCAA has access to it), but it seems to me the Bushs are walking the tightrope very well and looking pretty good right now. They likely broke the NCAA rules in grand fashion, won the Heisman, got millions out of the draft, recanted on unofficial promises -- effectively ripping off the seedy "agents" for thousands of dollars, and then put the agents in the hotseat with the FBI. To top it all off, he's the hero of New Orleans.

I'm not sure they'd grow the balls to do that even if evidence did surface... they sounded very unsure about the whole idea when it first came up.

I disagree, I think his actions of not wanting to discuss the matter without a lawyer there has more to do with trying to PROTECT USC. Face it, the guy is still young, if he starts talking it's very easy for him to say the wrong thing, so if he just stays quiet and waits, maybe things work out for the best.

He knows he's in deep, he knows that odds are he's going to get into trouble, but Pete isn't going to sell him out and he's best to return the favor.

The real question is who do they go after? The school or him? Take his Heisman or put them on probation and take away bowl elegibility?

Either way, things are getting interesting.

I don't get why Bush is in a hardspot right now? Even if the NCAA takes action, the worst that can happen to him is giving up the Heisman.
The only other bad thing for Bush is his reputation -- but I don't think the NFL really cares either. I agree that he is protecting USC though -- life is a lot simpler w/o the controversy in the open, and right now the only people who care are Yahoo! Sports.

I think the worst thing happening to him is losing the backing of his school. I mean sure, there may be no immediate consequences if USC gets in trouble, but sooner or later he may have a kid, and he may want to send that kid to college. Beyond that, LA is a pretty cool town to party in, if things went to all hell and say Petey lost his job, I would hate to be the person that made that happen :(

It's all speculation at this point, more details will come out, but if the NCAA was really interested I think they would have looked into this by now.
