Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

One of our members at HuskerBoard was on the HuskerVision team and made the tunnel walk for the Oklahoma game in 2009. I think it's brilliant:

Agreed. I'd say it's up for grabs amongst tOSU, UNL, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Penn State, and maybe a few more.

Hmm, not sure I'd put Penn State in the running, but agree with the rest. Of course, six months ago you'd have to say it's tOSU's to lose, but much has changed at this point, and I'd probably rate their chances below UNL & Wisconsin at least.

I know there may still be a cable issue in the state of Nebraska, but BTN launches its "Big Ten Welcomes Nebraska" stuff/series at noon this Friday (6/1).

Pretty much 24-hour Nebraska stuff for 3-4 straight days.

DVR is already set. Looking forward to it.

Oddly enough, I've only ever seen the 1994 and 1997 Championship games once - both times live. I've seen bits and pieces of them since, but never the whole things. This is going to be a lot of fun.

With all of the great things that Nebraska is getting by joining the Big Ten (tradition, excellence, common culture, kick-ass competition in several major sports, CIC, etc), the BTN is going to be the icing on the cake for fans. It's a top-notch operation with a focus on the sports I love.

Gatorubet is already getting a special bottle of scotch ready to watch Tommie Frazier in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl - 9 pm next Saturday.

Although that looks like season highlights, rather than just the Bowl Game.

Of all the Nebraska games I've experienced over the years - live or on television - that one stands out as my all-time favorite. Motor-mouth Spurrier oozed such supreme confidence and talked so much trash before the game, it was doubly-sweet to see he and his team so thoroughly and completely dismantled, humiliated and destroyed on the field that day. I can still see the shots of Spurrier on the sideline, looking totally shell-shocked and completely confused.

What's the best way to shut up any Gator fan? "62-24, 1996 Fiesta Bowl, Go Huskers!" (Although I confess to also enjoying putting Gatorubet in his place regarding Starbuck's and Apple stores a few months back without even needing to pull out "62-24!") :tongue2:

And just for good measure: :osu: :osu3: :bigten2:

A streak that the Husker fans would be thrilled to continue this year. Their opening game opponent has faced the Heisman winner on a team that played in the BCS Title Game for three straight years.

SI.com

...

Since 2008, my hometown Chattanooga Mocs have played not only the Heisman winner but a team that went on to play in the BCS national championship every year (2008: Sam Bradford and Oklahoma, 2009: Mark Ingram and Alabama, 2010: Cam Newton and Auburn). Two questions: First, has any team played the Heisman winner and title-game participant in three consecutive seasons? Second, the Mocs open the 2011 season with a trip to Lincoln to play Taylor Martinez and the Nebraska Cornhuskers -- will the streak continue?
-- Scott Davis, Chattanooga

Wow. That is remarkable. Did anyone outside of Chattanooga realize this? It's unbelievable. I expressed my concerns about Martinez and the Huskers earlier, but now I might have to reconsider.

While I didn't undertake a complete research project to answer Scott's question, I did load up Heisman.com to look for clusters of years where the winners came from the same conference or region. Facing three straight Heisman winners is not unprecedented. Navy did it from 1945-47 (Army's Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis and Notre Dame's Johnny Lujack), in the process facing two national champs ('45 Army and '47 Notre Dame) and a team that finished No. 2 ('46 Army). That's essentially equivalent to Chattanooga's streak.

Meanwhile, Iowa had the distinction of facing four straight Heisman winners from 1953-56 (Notre Dame's John Lattner, Wisconsin's Alan Ameche, Ohio State's Hopalong Cassady and Notre Dame's Paul Hornung), though none of those teams finished No. 1. More recently, Kansas State faced Nebraska's Eric Crouch, USC's Carson Palmer and Oklahoma's Jason White from 2001-03, with the Huskers and Sooners reaching the title game. It's entirely possible I overlooked another such confluence along the way, and I'm sure you'll let me know if I did.

Cont'd ...

I wonder if this is the same Moc fan that has been on HuskerBoard telling us we're going to win the MNC and Martinez will win the Heisman.

It's a nice sentiment, but.... we've lost so many players from last year, not to mention overturning half our coaching staff.

I'm content with fighting for the Legend title and a shot at the Big Ten title in our first year. That would be a heck of an accomplishment with this schedule and that turnover.

...And add to that the learning curve of playing all of us for the first time this year. The defenses are consistently much closer to what you guys faced on the practice field than what you were used to in the Big 12 and the offenses aren't as explosive or pass-heavy, but we play an extremely physical brand of football that'll take its toll on you over the course of a season. It's going to be different. Don't be surprised if you take a loss to a team that the experts say you shouldn't because of your newness to the league.

If your boys go into this season with the mindset that you do, you guys will have a really successful season. Y'all look to be the class of the Legends Division here preseason. If you guys don't face us in the league champ game, I hope you guys beat the pants off of Wiscy.

Yeah, it's like you dragged Spurrier down the stairs by his hair.
