Probably as close to an expert as you're gonna get on this site... Can be a fun town... main Rutgers campus is here (they have 5 campuses)...
has areas you need to be careful... but wouldn't hesitate to live/work there in the least.. love our weather... key train station.. short train ride to NYC which used to be a great city... very good hospital... short drive to the beach... hour from Atlantic City... hour to Phila.. hour from mountains and skiing... train ride to major sporting venues... high cost of living

People hear bad things about New Jersey. I once visited J&J HQ in New Brunswick. We have just won a global J&J award and it was my first solo ride in a limo, from Kennedy which was a pretty decent airport back then. I don't remember anything about New Brunswick except the baby products marketing offices and Rutgers Business School from that trip. I had been at Ft Dix for basic training and had some knowledge of Jersey, especially low-life bars in Bordentown. Years later, I was on a five-member team representing Mandela on the first trade mission to the US. I still laugh at the expressions on the faces of a couple of them and the support team when we pulled into Newark and Trenton rail stations, which looked like Beirut in the early 90s. New Brunswick isn't like that.

As NJBuck says, lots to do. Beautiful forests in NJ. Lots of things just an hour away and you will never miss a concert tour by a major artist.
