New House/Housing Renovation Questions

MaliBuckeye

1) Be A Man.
With the threads from JWins and matt_thatsme as inspiration, I thought it might be good to have a "questions from home buyers" thread.

So, I'll start by humbly coming before BP with a question about a housing purchase- We're looking to do carpeting in our soon to be new place (first home! Woot!), and I'm pulling out what's left of my hair with this process.

Seems everyone has different names for their carpeting materials, for their padding, for their stainproofing, for their styles so that it's impossible to do any comparison shopping.

Anyone got any advice? And remember that if we start talking about carpeting and drapes, this gets moved into the Romper Room pretty fast.

Thanks in advance.

Honestly, the quality and price of the newer generation Pergo type floors is really amazing. Not too hard to install and looks great. I helped a buddy install his black bamboo floor and it looks great (granted, he had no sub-floor build-up issues to contend with).

I'm in the same boat. Will be replacing carpet sometime in the next year or so.

Also, any recommendations on hardwood floors and hardwood installers in the Columbus area would be appreciated.

Lumber Liquidators is where I have bought cork flooring from twice. Their prices seem to be pretty good against the rest of the market and they sell a lot of hardwood floor styles.

I have a guy who has done the installation for me in the past but I am going to be doing another room at our new home next week and I think me and a buddy can knock it out in half a day...the room is square with very little that has to be cut around.

At some point, we're going hardwood/Pergo, but for now (with the kids) it's carpet all the way.

Any advice?

Look, toddlers can fall and smack their noggins on either hardwood or padded carpet...

You have to ask yourself whether you want no-touch icing or middle linebacker scholarships in your kids' future.

The great thing about using Flor is that if one tile gets messed up, you just replace that tile. And with the dozens of colors and styles they have you can do some really interesting patterns and designs. You can use their tiles as a large area rug or as wall to wall carpet. I've used their carpet tiles once before and the installation was beyond easy.

Well, with kids you definitely want to lay down some industrial strength adhesive, then liberally scatter glass shards all over to make for good coverage. Especially if they are crawling. Otherwise you are just contributing to the pussification of America.

Honestly, though, you may want to consider putting down a hard floor now and just using cheap area rugs. When the children decide to have a grape juice fight on your nice wall-to-wall Berber, you are gonna be pissed.

Thanks for the advice!! The main thing we're worried about is noise... it's a two story, and we don't want it to sound like the next Gregory Hines is living in the room above us. :)
